Learning Episode 1
Course Title : Observations of Teaching – Learning In Actual School
Environment
Topic : The School Environment
Time Frame : 1 hour
Objectives : At the end of the class, the students are able to:
a. determine the characteristics of a school environment that is safe, secure
and is supportive of learning
Introduction :
This episode provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on
a school environment that promotes learning and development.
REVISIT the Learning Essentials
1. A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has consistent
practices that:
keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free from distraction;
maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students.
2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about the
learning environment. They help in building and establishing the school
culture. These boards become one way for everyone to learn about the
vision-mission, goals, and values that the school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school's visual environment, display boards have four
general purposes:
Decorative- They offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set
the social and psychological atmosphere of the school.
Motivational- They encourage students to perform better and have greater
confidence. An example would be the display of students' outputs that
show that each output is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help
celebrate the learners' growth and progress.
Informational- They are used as a strategy to readily disseminate information.
Instructional- They move students to respond and
participate through interactive displays. They get students to think about
and communicate their learning.
The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective
communication, attractiveness, balance, unity, interactivity, legibility,
correctness, and durability.

ANALYZE
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of
the students going to school? What are your conclusions?
-The learning environment contributes to the effectiveness of the learning
process. When the school is safe and comfortable to use the students will be
more focus in the discussion. As what I’ve observed, when the school
environment impacts the students learning, the distractions outside hinder the
students effective learning. Hence, the students feel like their school is also their
homes. Early in the morning, they will go to school and do their routines like
cleaning the front yard and back yard and opening the windows. They made sure
that their learning environment is clean before starting the classes. The
cleanliness also contributes on how effective they will learn. When the classroom
is clean their focus will be more on the lesson and not in the surroundings or dirty
areas that distracts and catch their attention. I can conclude that the students
itself developed accountability to their responsibilities to their classroom and their
school. They learned to be more responsible even if there is no one watching
them.Hence, the school where they belong develops and feed them with wisdom
and knowledge that they can use even outside the school.
How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/How
does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?
When we have healthy environment, it contributes positive effects and positive
behavior. It makes us a critical thinker. We will sense why our learner behaves
that way, we can conclude his/her environment affects the way they act. We can
provide proper intervention and mis-judgement will be avoided. We can consider
that their environment affects them too and as a facilitator we can be more
considerate and be more gentle with them because they are just children that
needs love, care and attention to people around them.

REFLECT
1.Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why
not?
- Yes, I would like to. From positive things I observed there is also negative but I
focused on how I can help to aid that negativity. It makes me eager to give change, to
both improve the school and the learners. In my first two days, I can say that it is really
tiring. But as I see how students greet us, recognize us and trust us it makes me wonder
how will I give comfort to them. In my observation, although not everyone can easily get
the lesson the moment they asked me to teach them inspire me to be a better teacher.
The trust they are giving is too precious for me. Imagine, even if they are struggling in
solving a simple math problem they won’t hesitate to seek help. It means that they are
eager to learn and they are helping their selves to cope with the challenge. Our role is
hard but when we notice how students try to surpass their struggle, our willingness to
help comes out automatically. It is such a great feeling how they thanked me many
times because I teached them how to add numbers. Honestly, I’ve been enjoying this
journey no matter how tiring this is. Students inspire me and motivates me to come to
school everyday.
2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?
- a school campus that is conducive to learning promotes inclusivity that makes every
student feel safe, valued, respected and loved. Everyone is belong and no one will be
left behind. A classroom that make students feel belong and validated. That their
answers matter. A campus tat is child friendly and student friendly. That surrounded
by good people and good personnel who has descipline and values.
3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?
A classroom that is conducive to learning make students feel safe, valued, respected
and loved.
A classroom that promotes inlcusive education. Since in my classroom section one and
two is merged as one. There is still basic learners specially in section two. However,
my resource teacher showed that they are now belong in section one. No barriers and
boundaries in between. They respect each other and the teacher makes them feel that
their opinion and answers matters too. During recitation, not only bright learners are
called but also the average and basic learners. This way, a classroom become
conducive and effective learning happens.
4.In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?
- I can apply or accomplish my answer in number 3 by doing what my RT did to her room.
With some improvements and strategies. I want to focus in each every student I handle. I
want them to learn and I will help them to learn. I will boost their eagerness to learn and
inspire them that even if they feel like they are not too smart they are still good enough
for me.

Teaching is really challenging just like this section I handled, sometimes the section one
asked why the section two are always called to answer. The teacher will explain and
process their question. That way students will realize that they are treated equally.
Indeed, equal treatment matters. It makes students feel like they are needed in that
classroom and they are valid no matter how they answer.

Read the following carefully before you observe.
1. Go around the school and examine the board displays, How
many board displays do you see?
- there are multiple bulletin displays. First is near the entrance
where new events is posted. The new event is National Teacher’s
Month. The placement of Display board is a good spot were all
people who enters the campus will know what event they will be
celebrating in a specific month. The other bulletin display is in the
principals office, there are 3 different boards with different
information posted. The information posted are readable and easy
to understand. Only important details are in there.

office. The target audience or viewers of first display board is
everyone who enters the school. It could be students, teachers,
parents, visitors and even guests. Since it is place near the
entrance everyone who enters the campus would notice what is
posted in the display board. Next is the display board in the office.
The display board is located on the left side of the wall that is
visible when you enter in the front door. Since the target viewers
are teachers, students and guest anybody who enters the office will
notice and be informed about what is being posted in the display
board.
3. What are the displays about? What key messages do
they convey? What images and colors do you see?
How are the pieces of information and images
arranged?
-The display is all about the events, reminders and
announcements. The other display board presents the
teachers from kinder up to grade six then the principal.
The enrollment data, program and activities every month
then the personnel. The images are mostly
documentation of events and some are teachers profile.
Mostly the colors are green, white yellow and blue which
is good in the eyes. The information are arrange
sequentially. Recent events can be seen through the
documentation posted in the bulletin.
4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders
used?
-I can see that the displays are clean and durable. The teacher used
a hard colored paper and a printed information. It is also covered
with transparent plastic wrap which make sit more readable and
presentable. The display board is made in a plywood covered with
rubber mat. The rubber mat is color brown so that displays will be
focused when posted. Te brown display board emphasizes the
colorful displays.
5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar
inconsistencies and the like)
None, however the fonts are kinda small the boarders of the
display makes the information messy. There are also too much
color in it, that distract students attention. It make students
focus on the design rather than the content. Too much
infographics and pictures shown, less words that makes student
wonder what is the display all about.
6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?
-Fonts are small and not too visible. Students will near the display to

small to become readable. Some content are only pictures which
make student guess what is the content all about. Too many colors
that contrast each other which makes the content not readable.

attention?
-The corners and place where displays catch my attention. Like the
MAPEH display board is placed near the sink where he content is all
about Health. The proper hand washing is posted. For me it is a
good point. When the students notice what is posted, they will follow
the content and students itself initiates to properly wash their hands
because of the guide posted.
8. Take a photo of the display boards(if allowed).

Recommendations or Suggestions for improvement
-The colors of the display should be more simple. The boarders or the outline
shouldn’t be too much so that the focus will be on the content not on the design.
The fonts should be readable in the distance. I suggest bigger and simple fonts for
it to become more readable. The images should be lessen and avoid repeating
images. Bigger images will also help.

ANALYZE
1.What do you think was the purpose of the board display?
- according to what I’ve observed the purpose of display board is to give students a
brief description or idea about the topics that will be discussed. Also, the students will
take time to browse books if they notice the display content. Te students will also be
updated about the topics in each every quarter. The initiative to read will be developed
so as their love in reading. When they are sitting inside the classroom they will learn
just by looking at the displays. They could re-read topics that they find hard to
understand.
2.Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why?
Why not?
Yes, since students or kids like colorful things. The colors and images catch students
attention. Each
corner present interactive visuals which caters visual learners. Students who love to read
will gain new knowledge.
3.Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand?
Why? Why not?
-The language used is clear and simple which make students understand it
quickly. The students who can read will be more fluent and their vocabulary will
be improved. Te sentences used was simple and easy to understand so that all
students will understand the content of the display.
4.Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?
Yes, even if it is not perfectly made it still contributes to students
learning. The images and simple words still contributes learning to them. The displays
catch students attention and it makes the display board effective.
5.What suggestions can you make?
- I suggest bigger fonts and simple images so that students will easy convey the messages
without further explanations. I also suggest that images shouldn’t repeatedly use, since
the message is just the same. Try to add different image and use light colors that does not
contrast to each other.

1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with
effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.
-First the teacher must be resourceful, he or she must look for materials to be use if
it is not available. Second the teacher should be artistic, he or she must know how to
put design and combine colors properly. Because design cat students attention.
Third, the teacher should localize materials and even examples so that learners can
relate to the content. Fourth, The teacher should be computer literate so that he/she
can just look for images online and print it out, he/she can also encode examples
easily. Lastly, teacher should contextualize the content so that the display board
wouldn’t just a decoration but also a application of learning.
2. Which of the skills you named in # 1 do you already have? Recall your past
experiences in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?
- I am inclined with arts and I am computer literate. I can design things easily.
When I was in grade six I was tasked to help the teachers to decorate the stage.
We painted the stage and put different handmade flowers. These skills improved
wile I was in the field. I uses my skills in my demo teaching or even reporting. I
love making things beautiful and interactive. When my audience or my
classmates praise my works, I am more eager to make my reports more beautiful.
3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on
how you can improve on or acquire these skills.
- I think I need to develop my technological skills. Although I am computer literate
there are still things I need to learn and explore. Since I have a laptop, when I have
free time i am exploring different software so that I will improve on my own. I can
also help my co-students that doesn’t know how to use laptop. And sometimes, my
resource teacher sometimes asked me ow to save, copy and paste. This way, I am
not just helping myself but also people who also need help.
