Now that you have learned about various subjects and topics in journalism and mass
communication, it's time to put all that you have learned into practice.
Through the duration of the first semester, you learned:
● How to communicate better (course 1)
● How to analyze communication situations using various communication theories and
models (course 2)
● What current affairs means through a lens of culture, the political system, economics,
and sociology (course 3)
● How to develop a news story from scratch and all the processes involved in the field of
print media reporting (course 4)
● How to use various computer applications and tools to develop better, more visually
appealing content (course 5)
Course 6, titled Media Project, has been designed to reinforce all that you have learned this
semester, especially your news report-writing skills.
Let's look at the project task in the next part without further ado.
Task: Write a news story based on an important current affairs issue by connecting it
with the local circumstances.
Total marks: 100
Suggested time allocation:
● Ideation: 3-4 hours
● Research and information collection: 6-8 hours
● Writing the news story: 3-4 hours
Instructions and guidelines:
● Formulate an idea for a current affairs-based news story based on your local
surroundings. For example, bad road conditions in your colony, healthcare facilities in
your area, online education in your local government school, etc.
● After selecting your news story idea, find out the important developments related to it on
the state or national level. For example, if you are writing about the shortage of qualified
teachers in a school in your neighbourhood, you can connect it with the government’s
education policy, education budget, etc.
● Write a news story on this issue in 500-600 words.
● Conduct interviews and add quotations from people in your local area, experts or
officials. Add at least two quotations to your story.
● Research facts and government initiatives online (secondary research).
● Write your story in the inverted pyramid format and provide a sound conclusion.
● Use original pictures clicked by you using your phone camera or any other camera.
Add at least two pictures to your news story.
● Structure the story in the correct format, using a headline, deck, byline, placeline,
dateline and photo caption.
● Attribute your quotations and facts correctly, and provide the details of the sources
for verification.
● Ensure that the final news story is not plagiarised.
