Statement of purpose

Statement of purpose I am really fascinated by how complex the human mind is. I
find myself intrigued by how cognitions, emotions, and behaviors are intricately
linked and influenced by one's different experiences. Psychology for me, is not
only an academic discipline, it is a journey where one endeavors to grasp human
ways including their own and actually make a positive change. Thus, I take this
opportunity to express my intentions to pursue a BSc in Psychology at the Queen
Mary University of London with the aim of learning how to analyze and interpret
human behaviour, fortifying the academic base, and aiding in the mental health of
the people around me.

Since I was little, I have always consciously or unconsciously paid much attention
to the perception of other people’s minds, which was probably the reason why I
liked meeting different people. I enjoy exploring other cultures and having
productive discussions with them. The attitude I carry, in addition to my deep
comprehension and care for others, makes the pursuit of psychology a logical step
in terms of both my studies and my fundamental interests. I believe people need to
be compassionate, caring and non-judgmental, which I consider to be one of those
qualities that I strongly possess.

I have been lucky enough to study the subject of psychology in my GCE AS & A
level, where I am taught both clinical psychology as well as consumer psychology. I
enjoy learning about different mental disorders and how they affect people and what
has been done over the years, so that people are able to get treatments for
such critical and often hushed issues. The challenge, of course, is that this is
not just of interest intellectually; it also speaks of my wish to assist people in
living healthy and happy lives.

In the field of psychology, I have equally managed to get into the nitty-gritty of
knowing myself and others for that matter. It has taught why there is a need to be
benevolent and open to people at all times, more so when it concerns their mental
well-being. Just like physical health is treated seriously, I think mental health
issues should be looked at equally with the same seriousness. However, that is not
the case in quite a good number of communities, where it is either treated as a
taboo or not understood in a clear manner. This realization only made me more
determined to take up psychology as a discipline and help in changing the status
quo that is the ignorance about mental health in all its various forms that
persists in society.

Having said this, I also have some extra curriculum activities to account for,
which includes voluntary services that I consider a very important aspect of my
growth. In the Interact Club by Rotary Club Mumbai, for instance, I have taken part
in and organized charity events that involve spending time with children and adults
from the impoverished areas of cities. These activities have given me a broader
picture of various life situations, and brought me closer to the issues of the
underprivileged. They have also evoked compassion in me as I am now able to connect
and speak openly to people of different ages and races, as well as provide support
in whatever way I can.

Besides, my consumer psychology interest sparked a research project, during which

my peers and I interviewed over 80 people in local malls and explored their
shopping patterns. The experience provided me with an opportunity to utilize
psychological concepts in practical contexts: it improved my research and
analytical abilities. And while I had no qualms learning about how advertisers use
the different mechanisms of human beings in consumer psychology, it was the
learning experience in clinical psychology that grew to overtake my other
interests.
I look forward to many prospects of studying psychology in the UK, in particular at
Queen Mary University of London . British educational system which fosters
relevancy, practical instruction and diversity in the curricula is the best setting
for a student who not only wants to learn but use that knowledge in a better way. I
am also drawn to the strong academic standing of Queen Mary, the mix of students,
and the focus on academic research. There are great opportunities to learn in
London, thanks to its great people and multicultural society.

I aim at becoming a psychologist in the indefinite future. In my locality, there

are very few affordable mental health facilities and services and I would like to
help fill this void. I intend to sensitize people on mental health and its
associated challenges, and provide help and support to those who need it. That way,
I want to support people, especially kids and families, in focusing on their mental
health. I want to live in a time when mental health will be valued at the same
level as physical health, and I want to help in making that happen.

I am certain that the BSc in Psychology program at Queen Mary University of London
will equip me with the academic depth, practical exposure as well as the needed
self-discipline that will enable me to achieve my career dreams. I look forward to
joining the university and its activities as well as engaging in the different
student compositions with a view of attaining my primary objective, which is
working as a clinical psychologist, positively changing peoples’ lives. Thank you
for your consideration of my application.
