Assignment:
1. Select 5 Literary Experiences/Materials that you have utilized or used during your elementary
years. Explain why did you enjoy it and beneficial to you (Lesson 11).
5 Literary Experiences/Materials that I utilized or used are:
a. Dioramas and Display
During my elementary years especially in intermediate grades, we made a house
diorama as one of our final projects. This is a bit hard for me because that is the first time
I will make a diorama. Even though I spend too much money because of the materials
that I used but I usually enjoyed it because when I'm done making this project, I just say
"It's worth it". It's nice to observe the small objects of the house from the outside and
inside because I know I worked hard to make it. It's also beautiful to watch because it
looks so realistic. I also enjoyed it because it enables my freedom and creativity to put
something to design my own set of house. This material was beneficial to me because it
can be built to showcase learning on a subject matter or topic. I recognized different
things that go into making a house and what its parts are as well as the things that are
placed outside. This material pinpoints a moment of learning as I put myself in that kind
of place unconditionally.
b. Books and Big Books
Mostly, my teachers used books and big books to tell us a story. It mostly
happened when I'm in primary grades. My teachers provide a place with many story
books that we can read when we have free time, it might be during recess time or lunch. I
enjoyed reading those books because I can read stories that I haven't read yet. Before
going home, our teacher quiets us down to read us a story. We really enjoyed hearing
different stories so we will be quiet and the teacher will read. Even if we wanted another
story, our teacher told us to go home one by one while asking some question or what we
understood about the story. This material was beneficial to me because after hearing
different stories, I can also tell my friends and my siblings about the exciting stories our
teacher told us. It is also beneficial to me because it allows me to gain reading skills.
With my curiosity, I can help but read different stories in my free time. So, my
comprehension skills are also improved and I can imagine the happenings and events of
the story even though I am not on the story.
c. Diagrams
My teacher thought us how to understand diagrams. She usually uses it when she
tells us a story. After she reads the story she will arrange each event in the story to be
written on the blackboard using a diagram. I enjoyed this kind of experience because I
could recall every event in the story. Sometimes I even go along with my teacher when
she is doing an oral about what happened in the story. It is beneficial to me because I
learned how to integrate each event in the story using the main ideas only. I can analyze
the sequence of the story. So until now, I have learned how to single out the important
events in the story.
d. Bulletin Boards
Bulletin boards are one of the most common materials found in the classroom. I
enjoyed this material because I can see different pictures of what we are studying. Here
also found the school policies that we must follow. This is important for students to see
regularly so that they are aware of what they should do whether they are inside or outside
the classroom. I also enjoyed this material because even after we finish lecturing the
lesson, we can go back to it because it is still displayed on the bulletin board. It is
attractive to see and read the bulletin board if it is colorful; students will be more
interested in reading. It is beneficial to me because when I have other questions for my
teacher about the lesson, I can see them on the bulletin board. It helps me to visualize and
better understand the new words and concepts of the lesson.
e. Pictures and Collages
Collage making was always part of our elementary days. Every school year, our
teacher gives us projects to make a collage. I really enjoyed making collage because I can
play with colors, textures, and shapes. I usually used when making a collage are
magazines, newspapers, and colored paper. I can already take existing materials and
arrange them into new art. It is beneficial to me because it enhances my imagination. In
every material that I put into my collage, when I think about what color will fit and what
other good thing I can paste. It supports the development of my creativity even just by
making a collage because I am not good at drawing. It also helps me to be organized and
learn the skills to glue and cut small papers. It is also beneficial to me to gain
concentration skills because in making college, we need to focus on what we are gluing.
2. Would you use these materials in your future teaching demonstration? Why?
Yes, because those materials are beneficial to me in shaping my knowledge today.
If these materials helped me learn different knowledge, I can also give it to my future
students. Provide these kind of materials will give motivation to students to learn.
Students will learn more about each lesson if I provide interactive materials. For
example, I will use diorama because the students can visualize the concepts of the lessons
easily. I'm not just going to describe a scenario that the students don't know, but I'm going
to show it to them in a creative way. I will use big books and I have used it in my past
teaching demonstration. When I use it, the students are more interested in listening to the
story from me because they see pictures that show the events of the story I am reading.
We know that big books have large pictures and text so, the size of pictures and fonts
help students to focus attention and follow the story as they are listening. Also, I will use
a diagram because some students were not interested in reading a long story. To get their
interest I will put the important parts of the story in the diagram. Learner's attention is
more likely to be attracted by a diagram rather than by a long text. Bulletin boards can
also be used in my future teaching demonstration because this is not only for beautifying
the classroom but also to stimulate students thinking. And making collages will give
enjoyment to the students after many lessons we tackle. It enhances their creativity which
they can carry into their adulthood. These materials gave me good results as a student
teacher. In every teaching, it is necessary to have strategies and think of effective
materials that can provide more knowledge to the students.
3. What did you have learned in ELE15 for this term?
By studying literature, I learned about the sense of confusion and the search for
self-discovery of children. I understand the importance of various forms of literature have
had on the society of the past and the present. The chance to read and write is something
that every child should be able to experience. Literature in all forms is everywhere in
today's society, and with this idea, it is clear just how important it is. I learned the
importance of children's literature which provides not only new knowledge but also by
enriching children's vocabulary and enhancing the communication skills of the students.
It is important because it gives children the ability to respond to stories and form their
own perspectives. ELE15 gave me knowledge about the origin of the book I was reading
when I was young that could be used in the next generation. I learned what kinds of
books can be read to different age ranges of children. Since children's understanding is
not the same, there is a proper book that is suitable for their age. Aside from that, I
learned to give access to children a variety of books because reading is beneficial for
many especially for children because reading as well as writing builds their knowledge
that can perform in the future. I learned a lot from this subject, ELE15 is not just about
children's literature but also it gives me an idea of what material or strategy I will use in
teaching when I become a full-fledged teacher.
4. Is there any suggestions for improvement in your professor's methods and strategies in
teaching?
I'm trying to think of possible suggestions for improvements in my professor's
method and strategies for teaching but I can't. It's maybe because I am contented with the
way of teaching of my professor. Our professor was an effective mentor for us who will
be future elementary teachers someday. The way she greeted us in the morning, how she
interacted with her students, giving rewards after the term to the students who are
achievers in her subject, and giving her honest and wonderful suggestions for us to
improve our teaching strategy was motivating me to perform of being a teacher is also
good and effective. I can see her passion and she really loves what she does. There's no
suggestion for improvements for me because I think, she is more than enough teacher.
She can handle all kinds of students and she always makes sure that her students learn
something. She makes her lesson to be manageable so that her students will not think that
English in Literature is difficult because it covers a wide range of topics. It only takes a
teacher who can share the lesson well with her students. That's why I've learned a lot
about her subject. I am very grateful to our professor, she gives inspiration not only to me
but also to all students she handled. Everything she taught us and the words of wisdom
she told us about how we can develop ourselves and way how to properly handle students
really impressed us and I will make sure that I will bring it up until I become a successful
teacher.
