Mastering Active and Passive Voice

Understanding active and passive voice helps us write clearly and effectively. This lesson explains the two
voices, how to use them, and when they are most appropriate.

---

Active Voice
In active voice sentences, the subject performs the action expressed by the verb. The subject acts.

Examples:
1. The dog bit the boy.
2. Pooja will finish her work.
3. Students have studied the lesson to answer the questions.
4. The teacher gave the students a party.

In each example, the subject (e.g., dog, Pooja, the teacher) is doing the action.

---

Passive Voice
In passive voice sentences, the subject receives the action expressed by the verb. The agent (doer) may
appear in a “by…” phrase or be omitted.

Examples:
1. The boy was bitten by a dog.
2. Her work will be finished by Pooja.
3. The lesson has been studied by the students, to answer the questions.
4. The students were given a party by the teacher.

---

Forming Passive Voice

The passive voice uses the following structure:

Subject + form of “to be” + past participle (V3)

Tense Active Voice Passive Voice

Present Simple He writes a letter. A letter is written by him.

Past Simple She made a cake A cake was made by her

Future Simple They will clean the room The room will be cleaned

Present Continuous She is reading a book A book is being read by her

Present Perfect He has finished the work The work has been finished

Converting Active Voice to Passive Voice

To change an active sentence into a passive one:
1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
2. The verb changes to a form of “to be” + past participle.
3. The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent (optional in passive voice).

Example:
- Active: My sister wrote a letter to me.
- Passive: A letter was written to me by my sister.

---

Passive Voice with Two Objects

If a sentence has two objects, you can choose which object to focus on.

Example:
- Active: My sister wrote me a letter.
- Passive:
1. A letter was written to me by my sister.
2. I was written a letter by my sister.
