SHEET 1
1. What is the major function of the network access layer?
2. What tasks are performed by the transport layer?
3. What is a protocol?
4. What is a protocol data unit (PDU)?
5. What is a protocol architecture?
6. What is TCP/IP?
7. What are some advantages to layering as seen in the TCP/IP architecture?
8. What is a router?
9. Which version of IP is the most prevalent today?
10. Does all traffic running on the Internet use TCP?
11. Discuss with drawing a simplified communications model including model diagram, inputs,
and outputs.
12. Communication networks have many standard models. The de facto model is “Transport
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol” (TCP/IP) model. Briefly describe the TCP/IP different
functions for each layer. What are the names of the PDU in each layer? Compare it with the
most generalized OSI/ISO network model.
13. Mention the layers of OSI Model that make the following functions:
a) Responsible for transmission of bits.
b) Responsible for routing of message through network.
c) Provide format and code conversion services.
d) Establishes logical connections between systems.
e) Isolates messages from lower and upper layers.
f) Provides access to network for end user.
g) Flow control, and error correction.
14. Mention the layers of TCP/IP Model that make the following functions:
a) Physical interface between data transmission device (e.g., computer) and transmission
medium or network.
b) Routing functions across multiple networks.
c) Exchange of data between end system and network.
d) Contains the logic needed to support the various user applications Provide support for user
applications.
e) Collects mechanisms in a common layer shared by all applications to provide reliable
delivery of data.

is in:
a) Circuit switching network.
b) Packet switching network.
