DESIGN WORK Centrifugal pump

1 PRELIMINARY CALCULATION

Desired values of a centrifugal pump are water volume flow rate is 36 L/s with head 18 m. Water
temperature before th epump is 12 C and pressure is 150 kPa (abs). Inspect the situation with
hand calculation and Ns, Ds -chart at least with two reasonable rotational speeds (e.g. 3000 rpm,
1500 rpm or 1000 rpm). Compare the results in Vista CPD (e.g. efficiency, size, cavitation).
Choose one rotational speed and continue. Find following important characteristic numbers:

𝜔 𝑄
Specific speed Ns = 3/4
𝛥ℎ𝑠
𝑁 𝑄
nq = (N in rpm) 1p
𝐻 3/4

From Ns, Ds- chart when Ns has chosen (Cordier Line):

1/4
𝑑2 𝛥ℎ𝑠
Specific diameter Ds = 𝑄
and impeller outer diameter d2 [mm] 1p

Calculate also following interesting characteristic numbers:

𝛥ℎ𝑠 𝑔𝐻
Pressure coefficient 𝜓= ≅
𝑢22 𝑢22
𝑄
Flow coefficient 𝜙=𝑢
2 𝑑22
where  is angular speed [rad/s], Q is volume flow rate [m3/s], H is head [m], N is rotational
speed [rpm].

Isentropic enthalpy change ∆ℎ𝑠 = 𝑔 𝐻 [m2/s2]

Peripheral velocity 𝑢2 = 𝜋 𝑛 𝑑2 [m/s]
where n is rotational speed [rps] 1p

Mark (Ns, Ds) and other characteristic numbers on the Figure below. 1p

3 COMPARISION TO REAL PUMP

Find a real pump close to your own initial values (e.g. Grundfos, Kolmeks, Sulzer,
Flowserve, KSB) and compare to your previous dimensioning. 3p
