PRELIMINARY CALCULATION

Design conditions

a. water volume flow rate is 50 L/s with head 50 m.

b. Water temperature before the pump is 12 ºC and pressure is 150 kPa (abs).

Calculation of Specific speed

ω√Q
𝑁𝑠 =
∆ℎ𝑠 3/4

N√Q
𝑛𝑞 =
𝐻 3/4

If N =3000 RPM

Δhs = gH
Δhs = 9.81 x 50
= 490.5 m2/s2

3000√0.055
𝑁𝑠 =
490.53/4

Ns = 0.71

3000√0.055
𝑛𝑞 =
503/4

nq= 37.42

Now Ns = 0.71 mark on the following figure 1

Ds = 4

Ns = 0.71

1|Page
From Ns, Ds- chart when Ns has chosen (Cordier Line)

Specific diameter Ds = 4

Calculation of impeller outer diameter

d2∆ℎ𝑠1/4
𝐷𝑠 =
√𝑄

impeller outer diameter is d2 (m)

d2 𝑥 490.51/4
4=
√0.055

d2 = 0.199 m

d2 = 200 mm

Calculation of Pressure & Flow coefficient

∆ℎ𝑠 𝑔𝐻
Pressure coefficient 𝜓 = 𝑢22 ≅ 𝑢22

𝑄
Flow coefficient 𝜙 = 𝑢2𝑑22

Where u2 = πnd2

u2 = π x (3000/60) x 0.200
u2 = 31.42 ms-1
∆ℎ𝑠 𝑔𝐻
𝜓 = 𝑢22 ≅ 𝑢22

9.81 𝑥 50
𝜓≅ 31.422

𝜓 ≅ 0.50
𝑄
𝜙 = 𝑢2𝑑22

0.055
𝜙 = 31.42𝑥 0.22

𝜙 = 0.04

Similarly, all the above calculations were done for 1500 rpm and results are
summarized in Table 1.

2) Main results

Specific Speed described the pump capacity such as high head pumps have low specific
speed. On the other hand low head pumps have high specific speeds. Likewise as per
above results ( Ns = 1962), this is medium capacity pump.A value of between 0.3 and
0.8 indicates a radial flow impeller

Flow coefficient and pressure coefficient describe the pump capacity and the
relationship between pressure drop and flow rate.

As above key parameter values are accepted. Those are compared with the theoretical
values listed in Table 2. Those parameters are almost close to theoretical results.

Table 2 : Centrifugal pump key parameters values.

Parameter Theoretical Calculated Vista CPD simulation

values values
Specific Speed Ns/Ώs 0.71 0.72
nq 37.42 38.0
Pressure coefficient ϕ 0.497 0.454
Flow coefficient 𝜓 0.0437 0.039

Water power Pw = Q x ΔP

= 0.05x 50x1000x9.81

= 24.525 kW

Shaft power = 36.3 kW (copied from simulated values)

6|Page
Pump Efficiency = water power/shaft power x100%

= 24.525/36.3 x 100 %

= 67.5 %

The required Net Positive Suction Head is 6.96 m. As per design conditions, it is almost
150kPa available at the pump suction. So Available net positive Suction head is 15 m .
Therefore this impeller design is safe for cavitation issues.

Pump Inlet size is 4 inches (100 mm). Flow velocity of inlet pipe is w( m/s).

W = Q/A

W = 0.05/ ( π x 0.1^2/4)

W= 6.36 m/s

7) Comments

The VISTA CPD analysis system is an invaluable tool for designing pumps, turbines,
fans, and similar equipment. It provides accurate simulation results, allowing design
engineers to verify their designs before conducting actual pump tests. This process
enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of engineering design.

In this analysis, a pump with a rotational speed of 3000 RPM and a six-blade impeller
was simulated using the VISTA CPD program. All results are summarized in Table 3.

3. COMPARISION TO REAL PUMP

Use Grundfos pump selector and set flow rate and head. Select NB80 -200. Closed
coupled end suction centrifugal pumps which are suitable for design cases. By
considering technical details design results are close to the real pump.
