LESSON 2:
DRAINAGE WORKS – SEPTIC TANK
This section considers all excavations works and measurement procedures for works below
ground level.
Septic tanks constructed in concrete or masonry are measured under this work section.
The sequence of measurement for septic tanks follows the sequence of constructing the tank.
Excavation works, concrete works, formwork, reinforcement, blockwork and other works for
septic tanks, soakaways and cesspits are all measured in accordance with the rules of the
appropriate work sections. This means that:
CLASS E: Earthworks - Excavation works
CLASS F: Concrete works
CLASS G: Formwork and Reinforcement
CLASS H: Precast Concrete units
CLASS I: Pipework – pipes below ground
CLASS U: Brickwork, Blockwork and Masonry
CLASS Z: In-Situ Finishes
As stated in the previous lesson, the student is expected to read and understand the
measurement rules, definition rules, coverage rules and additional description rules for all
items of work under the applicable class.
Worked Example L2-1
Mr. Asumani intends to construct a septic tank on his site. You were approached by him to
assist arrive at the total cost of undertaking the work. As a first step, take off complete and
square the dimensions for the proposed septic tank as shown on drawing provided. Allow a
working space of 600mm on each side of the tank.
