Abstract: Fake News Detector
Introduction
In today’s digital age, the rapid spread of fake news poses a significant threat to societal
harmony, individual decision-making, and democratic processes. The Fake News Detector
project aims to address this issue by leveraging advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP)
and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. This innovative solution will analyse news articles and
social media posts to classify their authenticity, providing users with a tool to identify and
combat misinformation.
Objective
The primary objective of the Fake News Detector is to develop an efficient and user-friendly
system capable of distinguishing between credible and fake news. By integrating state-of-the-art
technologies, the system will not only classify news articles but also provide insights into the
factors influencing the classification.
Features
• News Classification: Classifies input as “Real News” or “Fake News” with a confidence
score.
• Explainability: Highlights key factors contributing to the classification, enhancing user
trust.
• Feedback Mechanism: Allows users to report inaccuracies, improving system
performance over time.
Proposed Methodology
The system will consist of the following components:
1. Frontend: React, a dynamic user interface allowing users to input text or upload articles,
view results, and provide feedback.
2. Backend: Django, a robust server to handle API requests, process data, and integrate the
ML model for fake news detection.
3. Machine Learning Model:
• Data Pre-processing: Cleaning and tokenizing input text for feature extraction.
• Model Training: Using datasets like LIAR and FakeNewsNet, classifiers such as
Logistic Regression, Random Forest, or Transformers (e.g., BERT) will be trained
for accuracy.
4. Database: PostgreSQL or SQLite for managing user data, feedback, and logs.
Expected Outcomes
• An interactive platform providing accurate and real-time detection of fake news.
• Improved user awareness about fake news and its societal impact.
• Contribution to building a more informed and responsible digital ecosystem.
Applications
• Individual Use: For readers and researchers to verify news authenticity.
• Media Organizations: Assisting journalists in validating sources.
• Governments: Combating misinformation during elections or crises.
