Name: Propene

Chemical Formula:

Structural Formula:

Physical Properties:
- It has one double bond, and is the second simplest member of the alkene class of hydrocarbons.

-It is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum-like odor.

-Melting point, °C is -185,25

-Boiling point, °C is -47,6

-
Propylene can be separated by fractional distillation from hydrocarbon mixtures obtained from
cracking and other refining processes; refinery-grade propene is about 50 to 70%.

Chemical Properties:

Propylene — chemically active substance. Since the molecule between the atoms of carbon has a double
bond, then one of them, less durable, easily broken, and in place of the connection fails accession,
substitution, oxidation, polymerization of the molecules.

Chemical properties of propylene are similar to properties of other representatives of a number of

alkenes. So it is characterized by the following chemical reactions:

1. catalytic hydrogenation (recovery) of propylene:

CH2=CH-CH3 + H2 → CH3-CH2-CH3 (kat = Ni, Pd, Pt, to).

As a result of this chemical reaction produces propane.

2. galogenirovannami propylene:

CH2=CH-CH3 + Br2 → CH2Br -CHBr-CH3.

3. hydrohalogenation propylene:

CH2=CH-CH3 + HBr → CH3-CHBr-CH3.

Hydrogen acid HBr joins the most gidrirovannoe the carbon atom at the double bond. Accordingly, the
remainder of Br bound to a carbon atom, which is the smaller number of hydrogen atoms.

4. hydration of propylene:

CH2=CH-CH3 + H2O → CH3-of SNON-CH3 (H+, to).

The reaction occurs in the presence of mineral acids (sulphuric, phosphoric). As a result of this chemical
reaction produces isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol).

5. burning of propylene:
2CH2=CH-CH3 + 9O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O.

As a result of combustion of propylene is break all ties in the molecule, and the reaction products are
carbon dioxide and water.

6. polymerization of propylene:

CH2=CH-CH3 → (-CH2-CH(CH3)-)n (kat, to).

The result is a polypropylene.

Use/s:
- Polypropylene end uses include films, fibers, containers, packaging, and caps and closures.

-Propene is also used for the production of important chemicals such as propylene
oxide, acrylonitrile, cumene, butyraldehyde, and acrylic acid

– as a raw material in chemical industries for the organic synthesis of various organic compounds:
propylene oxide, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, aldehydes, acrylic acid, Acrylonitrile, polypropylene,

– in the manufacture of polymers, plastics, rubbers, detergents, components of motor fuels, solvents.

-Propene is also used to produce isopropanol (propan-2-ol), acrylonitrile, propylene oxide,

and epichlorohydrin.[13]

Sources:
It is a byproduct of petroleum refining and a co-product of ethylene production.

Adds 0n or Add-ons:
Propene resembles other alkenes in that it undergoes addition reactions relatively easily at room
temperature. The relative weakness of its double bond explains its tendency to react with
substances that can achieve this transformation. Alkene reactions include: 1) polymerization,
2) oxidation, 3) halogenation and hydrohalogenation, 4) alkylation, 5) hydration, 6) oligomerization,
and 7) hydroformylation.

How this substance affects our body, environment, and daily life?

The home uses of LP gases and propane are more vast than you may think; one of the
most common is gas cooktops and ovens. It can also be used for outdoor cooking
and BBQ’s at home, as well as being a major source of power for pizza ovens, spit
roasters and other large cooking appliances. they are powered by LPG, with it
becoming increasingly popular in this transportation method, as the school systems saw
reduced fuel costs as well as clearer air for communities. Some large trucks and other
engines take advantage of the multipurpose gas; large trucks can combine the gas with
diesel, which saves money in the long run (this is known as diesel substitution). Other
vehicles are powered by LPG and, in this case, it is usually referred to as autogas. It
isn’t just used for cars, but also powers commercial vehicles. It can be a great substitute
for petrol in almost all petrol-powered cars and vehicles. It is estimated that there are 23
million LPG powered vehicles in the entire world.
