Answer the following questions:
1. What happened to Pip when he was in the grave?
Suddenly, he heard a terrifying voice speak from behind him. It was a frightening
man appeared from behind the graves and caught him.
2. Describe the man in the graves?
The man was terrifying and his clothes were wet and muddy. His shoes were filthy
and torn. He had a dirty rag tied around his head. There were scratches and cuts
on his hands and face.
3. Mr Joe and Mrs Joe were totally different characters. Explain.
-Mr Joe was a giant gentle man with kind blue eyes. He was quiet and pleasant. He
was very kind to pip. Mrs Joe was unkind and aggressive. She was a tall thin and
plain-looking woman. Her skin was rough and red. She raised Pip by hands.
4. What made it easy for Pip to think to help the convict?
-It was Christmas Eve and his sister was busy in the kitchen preparing for the
special meal, so he could sneak a piece of bread.
5. What are the hulks? Who is sent there?
-They are prison ships. They are moored on the other side of the marshes. The
murderers who rob and do all kinds of bad things.

Comment on the following quotations:
1. “Don’t think I’m alone.”
-The convict said that to Pip in the graveyard when the convict appeared and
attacked Pip and then ordered him to bring him a file and foo.
2. “Mrs Joe has been out looking for you.”
-Mr Joe said that to Pip at home when Pip came back from the graveyard.
3. “I hear her coming! Get behind the door.”
-Mr Joe said that to Pip at home when Mrs Joe was looking for Pip and Mr Joe
wanted to hide him and protect him from her.
4. “The hulks.”
-Mrs Joe said that to Pip when he was asking her some questions about the
convicts and he wanted to know where did they escape from.
