Lab Report 7

The experiment investigates the response and behavior of a bar undergoing free vibrations with and without damping, utilizing a torsional vibration apparatus. It outlines the theoretical background, experimental procedure, and methods for calculating natural frequency and rigidity of the torsion bar. The document also includes a rubric for evaluating the experiment's execution and data analysis.

3. Theory
1) Derivation of Formula
For the given system free vibration equation would be

𝒎𝒙̈ + 𝒌𝒙̈ = 𝟎
Now in the terms of ∅.

𝑰∅ + 𝒄∅ = 𝟎
𝐜
∅+ ∅=𝟎

𝒄
𝑚 = √ = 𝟐𝝅𝒇

Where, c is rigidity and its value could be given as

𝑴
𝒄=

From the torsion equation,

𝑴 𝑮∅
=
𝑱 𝑳

Now placing the value of M in c.

Were,

G = Modulus of rigidity

I = 2nd Moment of Area = 1 𝑚𝑅2

J = Polar moment of Inertia = 𝜋 𝑑4

The value for the frequency could be calculated as,

4. Experimental Procedure

1. The transient effects are first investigated without additional damping

2. Switch on their carder
3. Deflect large disc by hand by roughly 20° and release
4. Following illustration is observed with slightly damped decay process. The oscillation
amplitude decreases overtime

5. Measure the time taken for 10 oscillations and calculate the time for one oscillation (T).
Calculate the experimental natural frequency as follows
6. Calculatetherigidityofthetorsionbarandtheoreticalnaturalfrequencyfromthefollowing
formula and compare the results.
7. Now repeat the experiment with the damper.
