Properties of Real Numbers
The properties of real numbers can be used to simplify algebraic expressions and perform
the operations needed to solve equations and inequalities.
Associative Property of Addition
The associative property is used to add any three real numbers such that the grouping (or
association) of the numbers doesn’t affect the result.
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
Associative Property of Multiplication
The associative property is used to multiply any three real numbers such that the grouping
(or association) of the numbers doesn’t affect the result.
(ab)c = a(bc)
Commutative Property of Addition
The commutative property is used to add two real numbers such that the order of the
numbers doesn’t affect the result.
a+b=b+a
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The commutative property is used to multiply two real numbers such that the order of the
numbers doesn’t affect the result.
ab = ba
Identity Property of Addition
Identities are the numbers that, on operation with any number, give the same number as the
result. The additive identity states that when 0 is added to any number, the result is the
same number.
a+0=a
Identity Property of Multiplication
Identities are the numbers that, on operation with any number, give the same number as the
result. The multiplicative identity states that when 1 is multiplied by any number, the number
doesn’t change.
a∙1=a
Inverse Property of Addition
Inverse operations are opposite operations that undo each other. The additive inverse
property states that when a number is added to its opposite, the result is always 0.
a + (-a) = 0
Inverse Property of Multiplication
Inverse operations are opposite operations that undo each other. The multiplicative inverse
property states that when a number is multiplied with its reciprocal, the result is always 1.
a ∙ 1/a = 1
Distributive Property
The distributive property is used to multiply a single term and two or more terms inside a set
of parentheses.
(a + b)c = ac + bc
