23XRV Chiller Oil Recovery Guide

This service bulletin addresses the oil reclaim vaporizer heater service mode for Carrier 23XRV chillers, particularly for units shipped before and after July 2008. It outlines a solution to improve oil recovery rates during low load conditions by configuring the vaporizer heater to 'SERVICE' mode, which allows for faster oil recovery. The bulletin emphasizes the importance of reverting to 'NORMAL' mode within 24 hours to maintain chiller efficiency.

Installation, repair and service and equipment referenced in this Service Bulletin should be undertaken only by qualified persons. Carrier
Corporation: (1) makes no representations or warranties, expressed or implied, concerning the accuracy, completeness or right to use the
information contained herein. (2) Disclaims all liability for injuries, damages, infringements and other losses which may arise on account of,
or which may result from, the use or application of any information, method or apparatus disclosed herein.

MODELS AFFECTED:
Carrier: 23XRV
Serial Number(s): 71760 and Subsequent, shipped prior to approximately July 2008.
Serial Number(s): 18000 and Subsequent, shipped after approximately July 2008.

SITUATION:

Lengthy oil level recovery times can result from operating the 23XRV at low load, low lift, or
low speed following extended chiller shutdowns or replacement of the refrigerant charge. Low
oil levels may be observed through the oil sump sight glasses. Low Oil Pressure Alerts(142) or
Low Oil Pressure Alarms(228) may be declared.

SOLUTION:

A VAPORIZER HEATER MODE parameter has been added to the ICVC SETUP2 screen that
can be configured to either “NORMAL” or “SERVICE”. The “SERVICE” mode increases oil
recovery rates by energizing the vaporizer heater at higher load, higher lift, and higher speed
thresholds than those required in “Normal” mode.

The additional heat applied to the bottom of the vaporizer permits the oil reclaim actuator valve
to remain open and over a larger span of the chiller operating envelope. The increased flow
rate of oil reclaimed from the cooler decreases the amount of time required to return the sump
oil level to normal.

Thresholds at which the vaporizer heater is de-energized are also adjusted higher when the
vaporizer heater is in “SERVICE” mode.

Field Action:

The oil recovery rate following extended chiller shut downs or following replacement of the
refrigerant charge may be increased by temporarily configuring the VAPORIZER HEATER
MODE to “1 = Service” in the ICVC SETUP2 screen.

The VAPORIZER HEATER MODE should be returned to “0 = Normal” within 24 hours when
the oil level returns to normal. The VAPORIZER HEATER MODE should not be left in “1 =
Service” because the electrical load required by the1500 W vaporizer heater will decrease
chiller efficiency. 23XRVs are rated with the VAPORIZER HEATER MODE set to “0 =
Normal”.
