Grammar
Sentence formation
Sentence structure is the arrangement of words in a sentence. A sentence is
composed of words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Other
important words are:
✔ Subject – the noun or nouns that perform the action
Example: The cat jumped.
The subject of this sentence is the noun, cat because it is performing the action of
jumping.
Example: Mice and cats sleep.
The subjects of this sentence are the nouns, mice, and cats. This is called a
compound subject because there is more than one subject performing the same
action.
✔ Verb
An action verb expresses an activity that a person or thing can do. For example:
● Lee eats cake.
(Eating is something Lee can do.)
● The bear chased the salmon in the shallow rapids.
(Chasing is something the bear can do.)
✔ Object – the noun or nouns that receive the action.
Example: The child ate chocolate.
The object of this sentence is the noun, chocolate because the child is eating the
chocolate. The chocolate is receiving the action.
Example: She is eating rice and bread.
7
8

The objects of this sentence are the nouns, rice and bread. The subject is eating
them both.

Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to
school, does his homework, meets his friends
and enjoys doing sport.
But between 5.30 and 6.30 from Monday to
Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family:
