How to Use this Workbook

The tarot is a map of our psyche. This psyche builds universes, weaves stories, and creates heroes and
villains. Though the tarot’s foundation is universal, each individual gives these core principles color,
detail and character. The manifestation of this human essence is as diverse as our personalities, our
likes and dislikes, and as our strengths and weaknesses.
This workbook is meant to provide you a starting point for accessing the particular in the universal.
Make each archetype in the tarot uniquely yours through exercises as you get to explore the cards.
Delight in the colors, shapes and figures that arise out of your own mind.
Upon completion of the workbook, it is my hope that you have now your own little grimoire, a
compendium of your own personal archetypal world, forever yours to explore.
With love,
Tina

The Structure of the Tarot

The Major Arcana
The Major Arcana consists of 22 trump cards, going from the Fool to the World. Together, they
represent what is known as the Fool’s Journey. Individually, they generally signify life lessons, a
point on one’s spiritual and emotional journey, and recurring themes in our collective experiences.
Together, the Major Arcana is a cycle. We go from the Fool to the World, and back to the Fool again.
Such is the nature of learning, growing and expanding.

The Minor Arcana

The remainder of the cards are what is known as the Minor Arcana. They come in four suits, each of
which correspond to an element. They are numbered from 1 to 10 - or they can be one of four court
cards. There are 14 cards in each suit, with a total of 56 cards in the Minor Arcana.
While the court cards are technically part of the Minor Arcana, we will discuss these separately. The
cards that are numbered from 1 to 10 generally signify mundane matters or occurrences in one’s daily
life. If we follow the Minor Arcana, we find a tale of creation and manifestation (from wands to
pentacles), or redemption (from pentacles to wands).

The Court Cards

The 16 court cards are the part of the minor arcana that are used to represent people. In standard
decks, they can be called Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings. They can generally represent either
actual people in one’s life, or personalities that one can embody within all of us.

Part I: The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana

Developing Your Archetypes
The following exercises focus on helping you understand the meanings of the cards while creating a
unique and personal connection to each of them. The way that each card manifests in your personal
experiences can have a profound effect on how you interpret your readings.
Each card worksheet will also contain a section on reversals. Because each archetype can have both
strengths, weaknesses, positives and negatives, we can consider reversals as how the archetype can
manifest when it is unbalanced: when there is too much or too little of the original energy.

The Fool’s Journey

Since the Major Arcana reflects the soul’s journey from innocence to completion and fulfillment,
they can together be known as the Fool’s Journey. The order of the cards reflects each step of that
journey. The journey is both individual and collective.
In our daily lives, it is also cyclical and infinite; we are always on that journey, and it would be a
mistake of hubris and perhaps a tragedy to believe that as humans, we can find perfect closure and
completion. Life, which we are a part of, is always changing and flowing, and we are too. This is not a
flaw, but rather in our nature, and one that we must accept.

Septenaries
The 22 Major Arcana can be further divided into sections that help us better understand each card
and its place in the cycle. This is the theory of Septenaries. The cards can be divided as follows.

co n s c i o u s u nc ons c i ous supe r conscious

Cards 1 - 7 Cards 8 - 14 Cards 15 - 21

Rational Emotional Spiritual

Practical Concerns Search for Self Expansion of Soul

You’ll notice that Card 0, the Fool is missing from this list. This is because this is the Fool’s Journey,
and the Septenaries can be thought of as the journey itself, either as different paths, or more
traditionally, as sections of that journey. Furthermore, the Fool represents undeveloped potential.
They are truly a blank slate.

Part II: The Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana

Introduction
For the purposes of this section, the Minor Arcana will include cards 1 to 10 of each suit. Court cards
are discussed in their own chapter. With 40 cards in this section, an understanding of elements and
numerology can be a helpful reference without resorting to brute memorization.

Numbers
Blending numerological and elemental associations can be a wonderful way to get an overview of
individual tarot card meanings within the Minor Arcana. Each suit will contain an exercise to help
you begin to think in this way.
Numbers can also add layers of meaning to the Major Arcana. The first cards from 0 to 10 are simple
to interpret, but to derive the numerological association for cards after 10, you can add together the
digits. For example, the Hanged Man is 12. Adding 1+2 means that the numerological association is 3.

Elements
The four suits in the tarot correspond to the four classical elements. Knowledge of these elements
can help give you a quick understanding of any card in the Minor Arcana. In the final section of the
Minor Arcana chapter, we’ll also go into the concept of Elemental Dignities, or how the elements
interact with one another. These can be further subtle influences on your tarot readings.

Pentacles Earth Nature, resources, health, possessions, finances, physical world

Creation and Redemption

At the core of the Minor Arcana is the relationship between spirit and matter. There are two parallel
stories being told here, if we follow the cards in a particular order. Now that you understand each
elemental association, it should be easier to understand that the suits also have an order.
To create something, we must first have will and desire. This sparks our emotions; we are hopeful
of the result, but perhaps fearful of the consequences. Then we must plan, organize and strategize.
Finally, our creation becomes real and manifest.
Redemption is the path we take back to the source of all things; and reclaim our natural divinity. It is
the path of the matter into the spirit. This is the reverse of the path of creation.
We ordered the individual card meaning sheets to follow the path of creation. As you go through the
Minor Arcana, keep these concepts in mind, and see how they add to your understanding of the cards.

Comparisons & Relationships

The Interconnectedness of Elements
While the elements may seem like separate entities or concepts, they are all deeply connected with
one another, and cannot exist in isolation. This is true for things that exist in nature, as well as
within ourselves. Trees and plants require earth to grow roots, the air to provide carbon dioxide and
scatter their seeds, water to quench their thirst and the warmth and light of fire for them to create
food.
We too, cannot exist if we don’t have all of these elements, as well as the concepts that they represent.
What is a human without reasoning and logic? Without emotion? Without inspiration? Without our
bodies and our senses?

Using Elemental Dignities

We all know that when reading tarot, cards affect one another. Another layer to this is that the
element of each card affects one another too. Now that you have an understanding of the minor
arcana, with their strong elemental associations, you can unlock another layer to your readings with
elemental dignities. These give you more information about your reading, as well as a way to gauge
the intensity of cards in your readings.
You’ll also see in the following charts a mention of active or passive (or receptive in some circles)
polarities, which form another part of the foundation for understanding elements. Elements of the
same polarity strengthen eachother - like fire and air, and water and earth.
Like in life, we search for balance, so that the bigger picture creates a unified whole.
Too many passive cards can create a feeling of stagnation or lack of control, while too many active
cards can create restless energy, competition, and conflict.

Part III: Court Cards

The Court Cards

The Structure
The court cards consist of 16 cards, 4 of each element, and 4 of each role. As stated before, they can
represent actual persons in your life, or personality traits that anyone can embody. The four roles
or characters of the court are the pages, the knights, the queens and the kings. Each of them have
a particular way they interact with their suit. Combine these with their elements to help you get a
more full understanding of their character.

Queens caring, calm embodies, nurtures, understands Passive Mature

Kings confident, certain masters, develops, wields Active Mature

Understanding Court Cards

The court cards are some of the most complex cards in the deck. The exercises regarding these
cards will be more focused on relating the emotions, actions and energies of these cards to existing
archetypes to help create a more grounded representation of who they are.

Comparisons & Relationships

The Elements in the Court Cards
Both the suits of the minor arcana as well as each of the roles within the court cards have their own
elemental associations. That means that each court card has a primary element, as well as a secondary
element. This can further affect their personality traits and give you a better understanding of their
character. We provided this alongside a reminder of the traits of each element.
Just as with the order of the minor arcana, the court card roles are also ordered in the manner that
reflects the process of creation; from the pure fiery energy of the kings, to manifestation in the pages.

e l em e n t role e le me nt al p e r so nal it y t rait s

Fire Kings energetic, transformational, strong, powerful, courageous

Water Queens emotional, intuitive, devoted, mystic, creative

Air Knights logical, intelligent, clear, sharp, communicative, aggressive

Earth Pages responsible, practical, reliable, steady, organized, grounded

The following exercises are meant to help give an additional layer of elemental information to your
understanding of each court card.

Part IV: Daily Self-Reading Journal

Daily Tarot Reading

How to Use this Section
Now that you’ve completed the workbook section of this book, you should have a strong
understanding of each of the tarot cards, as well as built up your personal legend. If you haven’t
already, fill out the personal legend sheet in the reference section (page 188). You’ll be putting these
symbols to work now. Color coding may also help.
We split daily readings into 1 month chunks, so that at the end of the month, you can tally up some
statistics, and review your readings for the month. Here is an example, with sample symbols.

Monthly Summaries
At the end of the month, you’ll also be able to do a review. There, we also included a page for a
monthly spread, the zodiac wheel. The archetypes within astrology happen to give a good overview of
what living a balanced life looks like.

This zodiac wheel spread can give you a comprehensive overview of your month, or alternatively, the
month going forward - whichever you prefer. We included 6 months for this practice section.

Reading Tarot
Tarot requires a strong mix of intuition and familiarity with the symbols. There is no right way to do
it, and eventually everyone develops their own technique that they are comfortable with. This is the
beauty of it, and what makes each reader unique.
1. U nd e r s ta n d Y o u r Goa ls
Tarot does not foretell a fixed future - that is a belief that takes agency and authority away from
you. When working with the tarot, your goal should be to find insights that can empower you,
and give you information to make positive changes.
2. Ask Y o u r Q u es ti o n
With a clearer understanding of tarot’s purpose, target what you would like to know. This can
be as simple as asking for more clarity about an area of your life, or a very specific question. At
this time, if you’re using a spread, you can choose it here as well. It may be helpful to ask your
question aloud. For these daily readings, we are using only one card drawings.
3. Sh u ff le a n d R e set Yo u r C ar d s
Shuffling and handling the cards is a great way to physically connect with the deck that you’re
using. As intuition is an important aspect of a reading, you’ll need to bring yourself into the
cards. Try to shuffle at least once, but do it however many times you feel is necessary to get the
cards “cleared”. You can also cut the deck into 3’s and reorder them.
4. D r aw t he C a r d s
Pull each card from the top of the pile one by one, in the specified order of the spread. As you
reveal each one, start by simply describing what you see in the card; don’t think about meanings
yet. Describing the card out loud can often help us verbalize our often murky thoughts. You may
discover more details when you try and make these ideas concrete.
5. G e t a Fi r s t Imp r e ss i on of y ou r R e ad in g
Before delving into the individual card meanings, scan your cards and absorb what your reactions
to the images are. Be aware of this as you continue through the spread.
6. I n te r pr e t E ac h C ard
Consult this workbook if you need to, and apply each card’s meaning to your current question.
7. S e a r c h f o r P a t t e r ns
Start to consider things like emotions, feelings, objects and symbols, and color - if there are any.
Are there common suits? Do some of the cards have similar body language? Are they pointing in
a particular direction?
8. En d th e R e a d i n g
Rituals are an important way we process events, and even if you’re skeptical, the act of following
a ritual and treating your cards with respect and significance can be change how we perceive the
world by giving it symbolic significance. After you complete your reading, be grateful, clear your
cards, and make sure to store it in safe and secure location.

Astrology is its own comprehensive topic, with its own complex rules and systems. Since this is a
workbook on tarot, we won’t be able to cover enough here for all readers to understand everything
related to astrology. The previous tables exist so that learners who are already familiar with astrology
want to incorporate some of their learnings with the tarot.

Thank Yo u

This book was lovingly created by Labyrinthos. Labyrinthos develops free tarot apps, articles and
education about learning tarot and esoteric practices for self-knowledge and self-care. Purchase of
our printed materials, like this book and our tarot decks, helps keep up development of our free app.
All sacred knowledge should be free. Labyrinthos was created and is still maintained by one crazy,
socially-awkward hermit lady that does everything from illustrating each of the tarot decks, to
coding the apps.
Thank you for being a part of this.
