Intelligent Road Accident Detection and Severity Assessment

Using Advanced Machine Learning Techniques

ABSTRACT
Road accidents are a major global concern, resulting in approximately 1.3 million deaths and
50 million injuries annually, alongside significant economic losses. The rising number of
vehicles and urbanization necessitate advanced solutions for mitigating this issue. Early
accident detection and precise severity assessment are essential for effective emergency
response and traffic management. This research introduces a machine learning-based system
for detecting road accidents and evaluating their severity using a novel Crash Severity Index
(CSI). The proposed system leverages multi-modal data sources, including camera feeds, GPS
information, weather conditions, and vehicle telemetry data, to identify accident scenarios.
Supervised learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent
Neural Networks (RNNs) are employed alongside emerging methodologies like Transformers
and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to enhance feature extraction and contextual
understanding. Additionally, the system integrates edge computing for real-time accident
detection, reducing latency in critical decision-making. The model is trained on a labelled
dataset encompassing both accident and non-accident scenarios, enabling it to distinguish
normal traffic patterns from accident-related events accurately. The system demonstrates
robustness across diverse traffic and environmental conditions, offering actionable insights for
emergency response teams. This approach aims to reduce fatalities, enhance traffic
management, and promote safer roads globally by incorporating cutting-edge machine
learning architectures and edge computing. The findings underscore the potential of
advanced technologies in addressing critical challenges in road safety, paving the way for
smarter and more efficient traffic systems.
