School Message

All students in Grade 8-12 are required to participate in a Ministry mandated Core Competency Self Reflection
process three times, this year. Students will complete this reflection in Spaces and it is a requirement for
graduation. Parents will be sent instructions, later this month, on how to view their student’s reflection. In the
meantime, please ask your student to show you their reflection. The first reflection was completed at the end of
October, the second will be in February and the third in June. If students did not complete the reflections there
are instructions on our school website on how to do so.

COMPOSITION 11 Term: 87% (A)

Monika Kondo

Please note that this mark is based on initial evidence of your child's ability to demonstrate the Curricular
Competencies. We have been working on all the Curricular Competencies (Connect, Comprehend, Create, &
Communicate), but this grade is not yet a balanced representation of what your child can do consistently.
Progress during the second half of the semester will be crucial for demonstrating consistency and/or growth.

We will continue building upon and refining English skills (reading, writing, viewing, representing, listening, and
speaking) as we progress through the latter half of the course.

A student self-reflection of progress should have been completed by your child. Please ask them to share this with
you.

Ryan demonstrates sophisticated skill and understanding of the curricular content and competencies in
Composition 11. Ryan's writing consistently exhibits an insightful analysis of texts, effectively generating and
communicating complex ideas with strong supporting evidence. He is an engaged student who challenges his
thinking and reading skills, and makes creative and meaningful connections. He is an enthusiastic participant in
class discussions. Moving forward, Ryan is encouraged to continue refining texts to improve clarity, effectiveness,
and impact through grammar and mechanics. Keep up the good work, Ryan!

JAZZ 11

Mr. D Lowe Mr. J Williams

Over the past two months, it has been a pleasure working with the Grade 11 Jazz Band students. I've seen
significant growth in their understanding of what it means to play music in this unique art form. As this is a linear
course, no formal grade is assigned at this time. The first official mark will be given in the next reporting period.
I encourage you to have a conversation with your child about their progress. Reflect with them on what they've
learned, where they've grown, and what goals they should have to continue developing as a contributing member
of the ensemble.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss their progress further.

JAZZ STUDIES 11

Mr. D Lowe Mr. J Williams

Jazz Studies 11 is part of the Grade 11 Jazz Band course, where students explore Jazz History, Cultural History,
influential Jazz musicians, theory, and improvisation. As a linear course, students will receive their first grade in
the next reporting period.
Improvisation is at the heart of jazz, and all students should be actively working to develop their own
improvisational skills. I encourage you to discuss with your child how they've grown, what they've learned, and
what goals they have for continuing to develop as a jazz musician.

PHYSICS 11 Term: 93% (A)

D. Winkler

We are just finishing up the first unit, the Kinematics Unit. As such the grades are representative of quiz marks
and an acceleration of gravity investigation. These grade are not meant to be the final Summative Assessment for
the unit and so grades could still change quite a lot. The Unit Test will be completed just after the term report
comes out, so updated and more representative grades can viewed under the Academics section.

Ryan will very often participate in class discussions, though he will occasionally give a silly answer. He will work on
problems given during class discussions and homework questions, though not necessarily writing his work down.
He has shown that he can think about the topics in depth, often understanding the more subtle parts of the topic.

Ryan needs to spend more time trying to communicate his solutions better as it is often missing main parts of
representing the Physics that is being used. This is where writing all of your work while doing practice questions is
important, so that you can practice that skill.
