Identify two concepts utilized in this study and explain how they are conceptualized
The two main concepts in this study are the use of force and de-escalation. The use of
force means any physical action by a police officer that can result in harm to either the officer or
the subject. This concept covers various levels of force, including the use of words and the use of
firearms. De-escalation is conceptualized as an approach aimed at diminishing the chance for
potential violent incidents. It involves alleviating situations through communication or tactical
repositioning, with the purpose of solving incidents safely and reducing the need for force.
What is the dependent variable in this research? Why do you think it is the dependent
variable?
The dependent variable is the frequency and severity of police use of force incidents. It is
considered the dependent variable because the frequencies and nature of use of force reflect the
effects of the de-escalation training intervention on the behavior of the officers when interacting
with the public. In this regard, the study will follow up on the changes in the use of force issues
to determine how the training reduces them, with the view to creating safer and less hostile
interactions between police officers and citizens.

How did they measure the dependent variable?
The dependent variable, use of force, was measured using data obtained from official
records held in the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) (Engel et al., 208). These
records included every use of force encounter listing the sort and degree of force utilized and any
officer and civilian harm before and after the training session.
Name one independent variable. Explain why it is considered an independent variable and
how it was measured
The independent variable is de-escalation training. As the main intervention, it is
considered independent, with its impact observed on use-of-force outcomes. It was measured by
counting the timeline of ICAT (Integrating Communications, Assessment and Tactics) training
sessions provided to the officers in a cross-over manner (Hays, np). This allowed for a controlled
measure of its effects on the behavior of these officers and training effectiveness as well.
