The Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) Sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the engine oil. It
operates as a typical two wire sensor. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies the sensor with a 5-Volt
reference and a sensor ground circuit. For the EOT Sensor diagnostic, the PCM internally monitors the voltage on
the signal circuit, which is converted into a temperature reading. When the oil temperature is low, the sensor
resistance is high. When the oil temperature is high, the sensor resistance is low.

When Monitored and Set Conditions

When Monitored: This diagnostic runs continuously when the following conditions are met:

With the ignition on.

No Battery voltage or ASD Relay DTCs active.

Set Conditions:

The Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) Sensor circuit voltage at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is below
0.06 volts for five seconds.

Default Actions:

The MIL will illuminate.

Possible Causes

ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR (EOT)

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Always perform the PRE-DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE before proceeding. (Refer to

28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure) .

Diagnostic Test

1.CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC

1. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.

WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your
hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these
instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

NOTE: Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.
2. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

Is the DTC active or pending?

Yes

Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based
Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure) .

2.ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR

1. Turn the ignition off.

2. Disconnect the EOT Sensor harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
4. With the scan tool, read EOT Sensor voltage.

NOTE: The sensor voltage should be approximately 5.0 volts (plus or minus .1 volt) with the
connector disconnected.

Does the scan tool display the voltage as described above?

Yes

Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor and Powertrain Control
Module connectors. Replace the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor if no problems were found with the
connectors. (Refer to 09 - Engine/Lubrication/SENSOR, Oil Temperature - Removal) .

3.CHECK FOR THE (G24) ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE
(K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

1. Turn the ignition off.

2. Disconnect PCM C2 harness connector.
3. Check for continuity between the (G24) EOT Sensor Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the
EOT Sensor harness connector.

Is there continuity between the (G24) EOT Sensor Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground?

Yes

Repair the short to between the (G24) EOT Sensor Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain
Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure) .

5.CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS

1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.

2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following
conditions:

Proper connector installation.

Damaged connector locks.
Corrosion.
Other signs of water intrusion.
Weather seal damage (if equipped).
Bent terminals.
Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the
connector locks are fully engaged.
7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the
connector locks are fully engaged.
8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the
connector locks are fully engaged.
9. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
10. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
11. With the scan tool, read DTCs.
