Garbage Bag Costumes
Students will divide themselves into groups with 4 students per group
Each group will receive 3 Large Garbage bags, 1 roll of duct tape, 1 pair of
scissors.
Once they have chosen a group they will then (with their group) pick one of the
following characters to build a costume:
Gangster Rock Star Super Hero Roman Emperor
Bride Groom Prom Queen Princess
Pirate Samurai Warrior Knight Cowboy
Students will then answer the 5 W’s about their character (Who, What, Where,
When, Why). BE SPECIFIC!! Time, year, era etc.
Students will make a sketch of what their costume is going to look like. YOU
MUST SKETCH BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY CUTS!!
Plan carefully you only have the 3 garbage bags to work with. No replacement
bags!
Be creative! Think about how to integrate the plastic bags and the duct tape. In
the past we have beautiful hand made dresses with duct tape vertical stripes,
brides with rose bouquets made of duct tape, tiaras for the princess, veil for the
bride, a hero mask etc. Use your imagination!
You can use materials from home such as cardboard but it must be covered with
duct tape of plastic garbage bag.
Costume should not be wrinkled or torn and have smooth edges and clean lines.
Don’t ball it up when you put it away!
You can also use accessories like shoes, jewelry etc. to accentuate your design but
more points will be given if everything is made from the materials provided.
One person from the group will be the model and must wear the costume. The
costume must be custom fit to the model.
Student will choose an appropriate song for your models runway walk.
This design and build process will take a few days to complete. I cannot emphasize
enough that students need to plan before they use any of the garbage bags. Measure
twice cut once! Take your time, do it right and be creative.
