professionals for feedback and conducting clinical trials will be essential next steps in
this innovative approach to managing sleep-related respiratory issues.
3 Design Thinking Process
Bending Resistance:
The sensor uses flexible conductive materials that, when bent, alter resistance. A
person's chest expands when they breathe in, which causes the sensor that is
attached to the surface (either the neck or the chest) to bend. The resistance of the
material changes as a result of this bending. The device may identify irregularities
and patterns of breathing, including shallow or irregular breaths, by detecting the
change in resistance
Pressure Sensing:
When breathing irregularly, the sensor also picks up pressure changes. For
instance, shallow breathing may cause less expansion of the chest and, as a result,
less variation in pressure. On the other hand, more pronounced variations in
pressure may result from quick or difficult breathing. Piezoelectric materials or
pressure-sensitive resistors can be used to detect these pressure changes
Signal Processing
An electrical signal is produced from the variation in pressure and resistance. The
signal is processed by a analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to ensure precise
measurement. After that, the data can either be saved for analysis or sent to a
mobile application
By comparing the sensor data with typical respiratory patterns or using specific
thresholds, the microcontroller analyzes the data to identify abnormal breathing
patterns
Features:
Adhesive Application:
The sensor's medical-grade adhesive backing enables it to adhere to the skin firmly
and painlessly. The sensor will remain in place throughout normal breathing and
movement thanks to the adhesive
The user's comfort and preference will determine whether the sensor is worn on the
chest or the neck
Simple Battery Replacement/Recharge:
The sensor is powered by a coin cell battery or a rechargeable battery, both of which
are readily interchangeable or rechargeable. This guarantees that the gadget will
continue to work for extended periods of time without needing regular maintenance
Comfortable and Non-Invasive:
Users can wear the sensor for lengthy periods of time without discomfort because it
is small, light, and unobtrusive. It is simple to apply and remove without irritating the
skin thanks to the sensor's flexibility and the mild adhesive
Applications:
Medical Monitoring:
The sensor can be used to track respiratory disorders such as sleep apnea, asthma,
and COPD. It can identify respiratory abnormalities that might point to a medical
emergency
In order to improve their performance and breathing efficiency, athletes and fitness
enthusiasts can use the sensor to monitor their breathing patterns throughout
workouts
Sleep Monitoring:
By tracking breathing as you sleep, the sensor can spot any irregularities in your
breathing patterns (like apnea episodes) that might be signs of a sleep problem
4 Empathy Map
This empathy map captures what it's like to use a breathing sensor for monitoring
health and air quality. As someone using this kind of technology, I want it to feel
reliable and trustworthy—not just another gadget. Here’s a breakdown of each
section of the map and how it resonates with my experience.
Says The first part, “Says,” sums up what I’d probably say out loud: “I need a
reliable way to monitor my health,” and “I want to ensure my air quality is safe.”
These are the basic reasons for using a sensor like this. I don’t want vague readings
or unnecessary data; I need something that tells me if my environment is safe. When
it comes to health, accuracy is everything, and it’s reassuring to have a tool that
claims to deliver on that.
Thinks In the “Thinks” section, the questions—“Is this technology accurate?” and
“How will this improve my daily life?”—capture exactly what I’d think about before
fully committing to using it. I need to know it’s not just another device cluttering my
life, but something that genuinely makes a difference. If I’m going to rely on it, I have
to trust that it’s accurate. Beyond just getting data, I want to feel like this device is
doing something meaningful for me, like helping me feel more in control of my
environment and my health.
Does The “does” part is pretty accurate, too. I find myself using the sensor regularly
to check air quality or monitor specific health metrics. Sometimes, I even compare it
with other devices, partly out of curiosity and partly to double-check its accuracy.
There’s a bit of healthy skepticism here—if one device says my air quality is fine but
another doesn’t, it makes me question which one to trust. Ideally, I want this sensor
to become my go-to, but only if I’m confident it’s giving me reliable information
without having to cross-check constantly.
Feels Finally, the “feels” section hits home. Health and safety are big concerns, and
it’s easy to get anxious when you’re unsure about the quality of the air you’re
breathing or certain health metrics. But when the sensor readings show everything’s
in good condition, there’s a feeling of relief. It’s like a small weight off my shoulders
every time I check and see reassuring numbers. However, if readings are
inconsistent or there’s a lot of fluctuation, it can make me feel more anxious rather
than relieved. So, consistency in readings is key here.
Summary In the end, this map captures a lot of what’s important to me as a user.
The sensor has to be reliable, accurate, and worth the effort of integrating it into my
life. Trust is huge, and if it can consistently provide that, I’d probably become a loyal
user. But if it leaves me with more questions or concerns, I’m not sure it’d be worth
sticking with it. This map highlights the journey from scepticism to trust and the
importance of feeling confident in the technology I rely on for something as personal
as health.
5 Journey Map
This journey map captures the steps a user goes through when trying out a breathing
sensor, from hearing about it for the first time to deciding whether it’s worth recommending
to others. Each stage in this map is important for understanding how users feel and interact
with the product.
Awareness Phase
In the Awareness phase, users hear about the breathing sensor—maybe through an ad, a
doctor’s suggestion, or an article. At this stage, people are curious and hopeful, interested in
what the sensor could do for their health. But with so many health devices on the market, it’s
easy to feel overwhelmed by all the options. People are often confused about which product
would be a good fit for them. I think clear and simple information would go a long way here
to make this phase less confusing.
Consideration Phase
When people move to the consideration phase, they start comparing different breathing
sensors. They’re cautious but open-minded, checking out online reviews, videos, and
testimonials to get a sense of what would be best. I can imagine the excitement of finding a
tool that could help—but also the worry about choosing the right one. It’s tough if technical
details aren’t clear. I believe that brands could make this easier by providing simple,
straightforward comparisons between products.
Purchase & Setup Phase
In the Purchase & Setup phase, the user finally makes a choice and buys the sensor. This is
when excitement kicks in—they’re eager to start tracking their health. However, setup can
bring challenges. Between syncing the sensor with other devices and following instructions,
it’s easy to get confused, especially if the instructions aren’t clear. I think a more user-
friendly setup process could reduce a lot of the initial frustration and make people feel more
confident about using the device.
Daily Usage Phase
Once the sensor is set up, it moves into daily use. Here, people incorporate the sensor into
their daily routine, tracking their breathing and checking app notifications. Users often feel
empowered as they gain insights into their health. But there are some issues that could
become annoying over time, like battery life and false alarms. Both can disrupt daily use and
even lead.

7 Prototype
Overview:
Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, and other
respiratory disorders can be indicated by abnormalities in breathing patterns, which
are a vital physiological function. Continuously observing breathing patterns can
yield important information for the early diagnosis and treatment of various disorders.
In this project, a breathing sensor is developed to monitor pressure changes and
resistance changes brought on by breathing in order to identify irregularities in
breathing. Without the need for bulky gadgets or straps, the sensor is made to be
comfortable, unnoticed, and simple to use. It attaches to surfaces like the neck or
chest using a flexible adhesive layer, allowing for continuous monitoring with no
disturbance for the user.
Problem Statement:
Clinical breathing tests and other traditional techniques for tracking respiratory
problems are frequently complicated, time-consuming, and unfeasible for ongoing
monitoring. Inconvenient straps, belts, or intrusive sensors on wearable technology
may discourage frequent use. Thus, this project's objective is to create a breathing
sensor that is:
Non-invasive and comfortable
Simple to put on and take off (with adhesive backing)
Able to identify tiny variations in resistance and pressure brought on by
improper breathing
It is powered by an easily replaceable or rechargeable battery system
Goal:
This project's primary goal is to create a sensor system that can identify differences
in breathing patterns by measuring:
The sensor uses a substance whose resistance varies with bending, which happens
as a result of the expansion of the neck or chest while breathing
Pressure changes from breathing irregularities : When someone breathes irregularly,
the sensor also picks up on minute pressure changes
Additionally, the sensor should:
Be powered by a rechargeable or easily replaceable battery
Have an adhesive layer to ensure easy application and removal without the
need for straps
Components and Materials:
The breathing sensor's design incorporates the following essential elements:
Flexible Sensor:
The sensor is composed of a flexible, conductive substance (such a carbon
nanotube-based material or a resistive sheet) that, when bent or squeezed, alters its
electrical resistance. When the user inhales and exhales, their neck or chest
expands, causing the bending. The sensor should be sensitive enough to pick up on
minute variations in breathing and can be made to fit comfortably on the skin around
the neck or chest
Adhesive Layer:
The sensor can adhere to the skin without causing pain or irritation thanks to
the medical-grade adhesive in the adhesive layer. Because of the adhesive's mild
and non-invasive construction, the user can wear it for extended periods of time.
Additionally, it is simple to remove without damaging the skin or leaving any residue
behind.
Pressure Detection Mechanism:
To identify minute variations in pressure brought on by erratic breathing, a
piezoelectric material or a pressure-sensitive resistor might be utilized. The output of
the sensor, which can be used to identify irregular breathing patterns, will alter in
response to pressure variations as the chest expands and contracts
Power Source
A replaceable coin cell battery or a small rechargeable battery power the
sensor. The sensor can be used constantly for extended periods of time thanks to
the battery selection
For the wearer's convenience and ease of usage, the battery should be
simple to recharge or replace without requiring complex steps
Electronics and Circuitry
The sensor will need simple signal processing circuits, such as an analog-to-digital
converter (ADC) to digitize the signal and an amplifier to magnify the little variations
in pressure and resistance
A microcontroller, such as an Arduino or an ESP32, can process, store, and, if
necessary, wirelessly transmit data
8 Prototype Test
