Reliability and validity
Reliability and validity are important concepts in research. They help us understand how well a
method or test measures something.
Reliability is about consistency. It means that if you use the same method or test multiple times,
you should get the same result.
For example, imagine a psychologist uses a questionnaire to diagnose a patient. If multiple
psychologists use the same questionnaire with the same patient and get the same result, then the
questionnaire is reliable.
There are two types of reliability:
1. Internal reliability: This means that different parts of a test are consistent with each other.
2. External reliability: This means that a test gives the same result over time and in different
situations
3. Test-Retest Reliability
This measures how consistent a test or measurement is over time.
How it Works
1. Give a test to a group of people.
2. Give the same test to the same people again after some time (e.g., one month).
3. Calculate the correlation between the two sets of scores using the Pearson Correlation
Coefficient.
What the Results Mean
- A correlation of 0.80 or higher means the test is reliable.
- A high correlation means the test gives consistent results over time.
Example:
A researcher gives an IQ test to 50 people on January 1st and again on February 1st. They
calculate the correlation between the two sets of scores. If the correlation is 0.85, It means the
test has good reliability.
1. Inter-Rater Reliability: This measures how well different people agree when they rate
or score the same thing. For example, if a team of researchers uses a rating scale to
assess how well patients’ wounds are healing, and they all get similar results, then the
rating scale is reliable.
2. Split-Half Reliability: This measures how well different parts of a test or measurement
tool agree with each other. It’s like splitting a test into two halves and seeing if they both
measure the same thing. If the results are similar, then the test is reliable.
Split-Half Reliability
This test checks how consistent a measurement tool, like a questionnaire, is.
Steps:
1. *Split the Test*: Divide the questionnaire into two equal parts.
2. *Administer the Test*: Give both halves to the same group of people at the same time.
3. *Compare the Two Halves*: Use a statistical method (like Pearson correlation
coefficient) to see how similar the scores are between the two halves.
4. *Interpret the Results*: Look at the reliability value to see how consistent the
measurement tool is.
Reliability Values:
Excellent reliability: 0.9 or higher
Good reliability: 0.8-0.9
Acceptable reliabilit: 0.7-0.8
A high reliability value means the measurement tool is consistent and trustworthy.
