Online-based distance learning Stand alone course or combine with the Edexcel HND Computing (Business IT) to form 3 year degree

Qualification
On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) Business Computing. Design and implement an online business system meeting the needs of both the user and the client. Prepare appropriate entity relationship diagrams and SQL queries in order to efficiently manage data within the web application. Recognise the need for continual development and marketing of an online business system using multimedia objects. Use an industry standard integrated development environment (IDE) for the design and implementation of the website.

Participate in strategic planning. Analyse the impact of current developments in information technology on business.

6. Practical Project
On completion of this module you will be able to: Manage a project, including planning and scheduling the use of time and resources. Write a comprehensive professional report on the work done. Identify and define a project and select appropriate methodologies/tools to produce a solution. Demonstrate an understanding of the limitations and achievements of the project. Critically evaluate the project and the processes used.

Assessment
Assessment is via four assignments, one examination and a project.

Course Description
This programme will appeal to those who have already been successful in studying computing at a Higher Education level (by completing a BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Computing & Systems Development, for example).

3. Understanding Systems
On completion of this module you will be able to: Identify a system. Compare and contrast the various types of systems that can exist. Analyse a system to identify its components. Critically appraise the importance of the role of the systems approach in identifying, amending and developing Information Systems. Use models in analysing and developing systems.

Please note students may be required to purchase certain software.

Exemptions
For this qualification, we may allow you to transfer credit for relevant study completed elsewhere. However, this only applies to stages 1 and 2. No exemptions are allowed from the final year top-up (stage 3). Exemptions are considered on an individual basis when you submit an application form. Please note that we cannot consider work experience alone for exemptions.

1. Current Trends in Networking


On completion of this module you will be able to: Evaluate threats to network provision and compare solutions Compare and contrast existing and emergent networking technologies Apply appropriate network technologies in complex settings, providing alternative solutions, clear selections and justifications.

4. Database Solutions
On completion of this module you will be able to: Explain the concepts of different types of database. Identify the principles of a relational database. Explain the 3 Level architecture of a relational database. Produce a physical database. Produce SQL statements to create and interrogate a database.

2. Online Business Systems


On completion of this module you will be able to: Manage the implementation phase of a web application and deploy appropriate client-side and server-side technologies. Justify the design and development of the application and critically evaluate their implementation approach.

5. Management in IT
On completion of this module you will be able to: Critically appraise principles of staff management. Use software management tools.
