Prepared by: CHERYL JEAN M. CALIG-ONAN
I. Objectives:
At the end of 60-minute period, the students will be able to:
illustrate the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) of an ungrouped data;
calculate the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) of an ungrouped data; and
state the importance of knowing these measures of central tendency in real-life situation.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Measures of Central Tendency
Learning Competency:

Prayer
A student from the class will lead the prayer.
Greetings
“Good morning, class!”
Attendance
The classroom secretary will check the attendance.
Classroom rules:
When somebody is talking, everybody must listen to him/her.
Turn your cell phones off or in silent mode during class hours.
If you want to answer, just raise your right hand to be recognized.
Participate actively in every discussion.
Cheating is strictly prohibited during quizzes and exams.
B. Review
Introduction to Statistics
C. Motivation
Which is Which?
The students will be given some illustrations to observe and they will identify based on
their interpretations on the images.
Questions:
1. What have you observed from the given visual and audio illusions?
2. Do you find it easy or difficult to compare the visual and audio illusions?
3. How do you identify the differences?
4. What do you feel after getting the correct identification of illusions?
D. Lesson Proper
Measures of Central Tendency
Ask question on the definition of measures of central tendency
A measure of central tendency describes a set of data by identifying the
central position in the data set as a single value.
Present the concept of the lesson by illustrating the three measures as well as
the definition
Arithmetic Mean ( x ) – sum of all observations (data) divided by the
number of observations (data).
x=
∑n
n
Illustration:
The athlete’s scores in a five-round game are as follows:
15, 33, 40, 52, 20. Find his average score.
Solution:
x=
∑ n = 15+33+ 40+52+20 = 160 =32
n 5 5
If the heights of 5 people are 140 cm, 150 cm, 145 cm, 136 cm, and
149 cm. Find the mean height.
Solution:
x=
∑ n = 140+150+145+136+ 149 = 720 =144
n 5 5
Median – the value of the middlemost observation (data), obtained after
arranging the data in descending or ascending order. To get the median,
there are steps that need to consider.
Step 1: Arrange the data in ascending or descending order.
Step 2: If number of data (n) is odd, take the middlemost value as the
median.
Step 3: If number of data (n) is even, take the two middle values and get
the average.
Illustration:
Consider the following values: 25, 34, 23, 30, 28. What is its
median?
Solution:
23, 25, 28, 30, 34
The following are the results of Carlo’s scores in Math quizzes out of
20 items: 18, 20, 16, 15, 12, 19. Get the median.
Solution:
12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20
16+18 34
= =17 (median)
2 2
Mode - the value which appears most often in the given data or the
observation with the highest frequency. A data may have no mode, 1
mode or more than 1 mode. Depending upon the number of modes the
data has, it can be called unimodal, bimodal, trimodal or multimodal.
Illustration:
Zeus’ scores in Mathematics 7 for the 4th Quarter on his written task
was: 10, 15, 25, 10, 5, 30, 28, 39, 15, 5, 33. Find the mode of his
scores.
Solution:
Based on the given data the scores 5 and 10 appeared the
same number of repetitions, therefore, 5 and 10 are the
mode on the given set of data and it is BIMODAL.
Find the mode on the given data: 9, 4, 17, 4, 7, 8, 14, 4, 7, 10.
Solution:
Four (4) appears thrice and seven (7) appears twice on the
data given. However, four (4) have the greatest number of
appearances compared to seven (7), therefore, 4 is the mode
and its UNIMODAL.
Provide illustrative examples to be solved.
“Dice It Up” Activity
The teacher will introduce a dice app using their phone where they can use to
get a value. Afterwards, they will do the assigned task based on value they get
from the dice. Here, students are given opportunity to enjoy the activity while
learning.
Dot/s in a Dice Assigned Task
1 List the age of Team A members and find the mean.
Make the Team B members stand and find the mode
2
by gender.
Make the Team C members stand in front and form a
3
line according to height. Get the median.
List down the letters of your first name and find the
4
mode.
Among your siblings, who do you considered as the
5
median by age?
Compute the mean average of your 3rd Quarter grades
6
in all 8 subjects.
E. Application
Group the students into 4.
Have a group activity and give them the materials.
In their given manila paper, different problem solving is already written.
The students will be tasked to illustrate and solve word problems on the
measures of central tendency of an ungrouped data.
The students will be instructed to work as one in just 10 to 15 minutes.
Afterwards, output of each group must be posted on the board.
Each group will be guided according to the scoring rubrics.
Group Activity: (Find the mean, median and mode of each given problem)
Group 1
The school nurse decided to get the heights of 11 basketball players in
Caraga National High School. He then recorded as follows: 160, 158,
158, 159, 160, 160, 162, 165, 166, 167, 170.
