Benefits of having brain gym and
breaks activities in the classroom

1 Deep breathing exercises help increase oxygen 2 Mindful meditation or visualization exercises
flow to the brain and calm the mind. help students focus and clear their minds.

3 Quick physical activities such as jumping jacks


or jogging in place increase heart rate and 4 Dynamic stretching get the body moving and

solving skills and activate different parts of the
brain.
Picture matching: Print out a set of
pictures and cut them into pairs.
Mix them up and ask students to
match the pairs as quickly as
possible.
Picture sequencing: Choose
a set of pictures that tell a
story and mix them up. Ask
students to put them in the
correct order.
Picture recall: Show a set of
pictures or objects for a
short amount of time and
then ask students to recall
as many as possible.
Picture association: Show a
picture or write a word and
ask students to come up
with as many words
associated with it as
possible.
Picture categorization: Show
a set of pictures and ask
students to sort them into
categories based on a given
criteria (e.g. animals vs.
plants).
Picture creation: draw a line and
ask your students to continue
with the drawing by making only
one line at a time. You can set a
challenge before starting (E.g.
"draw a flower/animal/face")
Cross Crawls: This activity
involves crossing the midline of
the body by touching the
opposite knee to elbow while
standing or sitting. It helps to
improve coordination and focus.
Hook Ups: This activity involves
crossing one ankle over the other
and intertwining the fingers while
pressing them together and taking
deep breaths. It helps to reduce
stress and improve focus.
Lazy 8s: This activity
involves tracing the figure 8
in the air with one hand while
following it with the eyes. It
helps to improve visual
tracking and coordination.
Say the colour, not the word: Write
on the board or present a poster to
your students and ask them to say
as fast as they can the colour they
see, but not the word.
Mindful Breathing: inhale and count
to 5, hold the air for 5 seconds,
exhale for 5 second and repeat at
least 5 times.
Chair yoga: stretch your muscles
while taking deep breaths.
