ArcMap Steps

This document outlines the steps for conducting hydrologic analysis using ArcMap, including setting up the environment, importing data, creating shapefiles, and performing terrain preprocessing. It details the necessary toolbars, folder structures, and specific geoprocessing tasks required to analyze catchment areas and river characteristics. The final steps involve calculating the total catchment area and determining elevation metrics for headwaters and outlets.

ArcMap Steps (Hydrologic Analysis)

Preliminaries
1. The following toolbars must be present at all times:
- Catalog
- Search
- Create Features (Optional)
2. Go to Customize > Select ArcMap Options > General > Roll Forward / Drag Up
(Zooms In).
3. Go to Geoprocessing > Geoprocessing Options > Check only the following:
- Overwrite the outputs of geoprocessing operations
- Stay up if Error Occurs
- Results are temporary by default
4. Create a Main Folder at Local Disk C, and must contain Mindanao_SAR folder.
5. Within the created Main Folder, create another Sub-Folder intended for the
project you are working with, containing the KMZ file of the alignment.
Create Project
6. Create project file by saving it within the Created Sub-folder.
Connecting to Folders
7. Go to Catalog Toolbar, and click “Connect to Folder”. Then, locate the Main
Folder at Local Disk C.
Import Mindanao_SAR
8. Go to Catalog Toolbar > Folder Connections, click drop down list under the Main
Folder, look for Mindanao_SAR Folder and drag the min_sar (Raster Image) to
the workspace.

Import KMZ File

9. Go to Search Toolbar and search for KML to Layer Conversion Tool, and covert
the desired KMZ file located within the abovesaid Sub-Folder (Same Input and
Output Folder).
[Link] to Catalog Toolbar > Folder Connections, click drop down list under the
Created Sub-folder, look for ArcGIS Layer of the alignment to the workspace.
Creation of Shape File (Polygon)
[Link] to Catalog Toolbar > Folder Connections, right click Created Sub-folder >
New > Shapefile.
[Link] Desired Name (Catchment_Polygon) > Feature Type (Polygon) > Edit
Coordinate System > Projected Coordinate System > Look for WGS 1984 Zone
UTM 51N > Add to Favorites.
13.Catchment_Polygon (New_Shapefile) will be reflected under table of contents.
[Link] click New_Shapefile > Edit Features > Start Editing > Click Continue >
Look for Editor Toolbar > Click Create Features (Tool Bar will Pop-up) > Click
Catchment_Polygon > Look for Construction Tools > Select Polygon > Create
Desired Polygon for expected catchment area (include highest and lowest
elevation) > Stop Editing.
[Link] to table of contents > Click New_Shapefile (Set polygon to transparent (no
fill) and thicken the border (outline color red)).

Create Clipping Boundary (Using Clip or Extract by Mask)

[Link] to Search Toolbar and search for Clip (Data Management Tool) or Extract
by Mask (Spatial Analyst).
[Link] Clip (Data Management Tool) input desired name and Check (/) Use
Input Features for Clipping Geometry.
[Link] Extract by Mask (Spatial Analyst) input Raster, select min_sar (Raster
Image), for Output Raster, select the Catchment_Polygon. For Output
Location, select the Created Sub-folder and input desired name Clip.
[Link] to Catalog Toolbar > Folder Connections, click drop down list under the Sub-
Folder, look for the Created Clip File and it to the workspace.
[Link] to Table of Contents > Uncheck the min_sar file.
Terrain Preprocessing
[Link] to Customize > Toolbars > Check Arc Hydro Tools, HEC-GeoHMS and
HEC-GeoRAS
[Link] to Customize > Extensions > Check all (3D Analyst, ArcScan,
Geostatistical Analyst, Network Analyst, Publisher, Schematics, Spatial
Analyst and Tracking Analyst).
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > DEM Manipulation > Build Walls (Boundary) >
Select DEM (Created Clip - Clip) > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > DEM Manipulation > Fill Sinks (For Undistracted
Flow due to Irregularities of Surface) > Select DEM (Walled DEM) > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Flow Direction > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Flow Accumulation > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Stream Definition > Ok (set to color blue to show
streams)
- Trial and Error in order to establish stream flow around the point of interest,
and to lessen the sub-basins:
- Go to Catalog Toolbar > Folder Connections > Under Created Folder, drop
down Layers and delete Str.
- Repeat #26 and Update the Area (Square Km) to larger value (ex. 1).
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Stream Segmentation > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Catchment Grid Delineation > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Catchment Polygon Processing > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Drainage Line Processing > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Adjoint Catchment Processing > Ok
Project Setup
[Link] to Project Setup > Start New Project > Ok > Input Project Name (No Space)
> Input Description (CA - Catchment Area) > Target Folder (Created Folder)
- Project Point and Project Area will be reflected under Table of Contents.

Project Point
[Link] Pin (Add Project Point) which is next to Utility > Uncheck Str > Click
somewhere near the Location of the Proposed RCBC/RCPC or Bridge (Point of
Interest) > Ok
[Link] Editor > Start Editing > Click Project Point > Ok > Continue Editing > Click
Project Point (Red Color) > Move the Project Point along the Drainage Line and
Point of Interest > Editor > Stop Edit > Save

Project Setup
[Link] to Project Setup > Generate Project > Set Raw DEM to Clip (Created Clip) >
Catchment Area will Show-up > Click Yes > Main View DEM will be Generated
(Under the created Project Name) > Ok
Characteristics

[Link] to Characteristics > River Slope > Ok
[Link] to Terrain Preprocessing > Slope > Input RawDEM > Ok
[Link] to Characteristics > Basin Slope > Input Slope Grid (WshSlope – Watershed
Slope) > Ok
[Link] to Characteristics > Longest Flowpath > Ok (If not reflected in the table of
contents, Go to Catalog > Look for [Link] > Drag it to the Workspace)
[Link] to Characteristics > Basin Centroid > Ok
[Link] to Characteristics > Centroid Elevation > Ok
