The size requirement for the Airbnb: 36' x 25' Typically the width is listed first so is the house
36'
wide across the front OR can students decide if the front is 36' or 25'?
Students can decide since they are placing windows and doors.
Are there recommended computer applications to help with the 3D layout and planning?
I always recommend drawing by hand with grid paper and a ruler. There is a video link at the end of
the scenario PDF. This is a great exercise for the students to be able to learn to draw to scale. With
3D planning online, many times students create their floorplans online and then do not get it
printed properly to scale which deducts points. If creating online, please print to scale for the
floorplan. This is so important. Personally, when I competed, I used hand drafting, but for fun I used
to create houses on a software called Home Designer Software by Chief Architect (they also offer
free trials – I would reach out to them). It is not free but if the school could purchase, it is beneficial.
Otherwise, I know there are great programs out there if you google free software.
Is the house allowed to be 2 stories?
Ceiling height can be determined by students, but area to be designed in 900 sq ft so it cannot have
a physical 2nd floor.
Can you please provide free design/CAD websites students can use for their presentations?
See #2. Free trials of Home Designer Software by Chief Architect would be good. Otherwise, I highly
recommend watching the resource video at the end of the scenario PDF which goes over drafting by
hand. If students have any questions, please reach out to me: [email protected].
Design Scenario page mentions Design Fee Invoice ONLY while Project PDF asks for design fee
PLUS 5 proposed furnishing/fixture samples and floor treatment. Are these furnishing/fixture
samples also to be priced out per item/sq. ft.?
Furnishings/Fixtures would be per item, not per sq. ft. Main point with this is for students to track
their hours. The 5 items should only be 5 items, no need to spend more time on pricing out
everything.
Do you have to actually have to have pictures or items of Disney princesses or Harry Potter or
actual Barbie in the design or can it be more themed through color and use of accessories?
Pictures or items are not required. Can be themed because this is to be an inspiration.
At level one what does the project need to look like? Do they need to create a physical scaled
down replica? Are they allowed to create one if they want to?
Replica is not required. Please refer to rubric to make sure everything is met point wise. Anything
additional is great, but remember it is not judged on.
Are we allowed to put a pool on the property?
You can but keep in mind area that is being designed is 250 sq. ft. and needs to be designed with
that in mind.
Are we designing both the exterior and interior of the home?
Only interior and the outdoor space. Exterior is if you want to go above and beyond, but interior is a
requirement.
What are we not allowed to put on the exterior such as finishes or building materials?
If it pertains to the outdoor area, please research what materials can be used outdoors. It doesn’t
need to be very in depth, but it needs to be appropriate to the application. In this case, this is
outdoors so we want to think durable, weatherproof etc. Items and materials will show what
application they can be used in.
Since there is an option for a Disney theme, how will copyright laws work?
It will be inspired after a Disney, Harry Potter or Barbie theme. Doesn’t need to have the actual
items or names in it. For example, Barbie could be called the Malibu Pink House or Disney could be
called Woodland Escape. During the presentation, students can share what theme inspired them.
Is the 250sqft outdoor space separate or included in the 900sqft given for the house?
Separate.
Can our outdoor space be a functional greenhouse with a dinning/cooking space?
Yes
What should the focus of each of the 3 boards be? (Should the outdoor space have its own
board?)
This is up to the students. Personally, outdoor space on it’s own board does make sense.
When putting together our portfolio, should each room have its own itemized list of prices,
materials, lighting, etc.
Only need prices of five items total. As far as materials and lighting, show what makes sense overall.
You do not need every image of an item on the board. Think of it as an inspiration. However,
everything should be drawn on the floor plan.
What is the climate for the area we were given? Or are we supposed to choose a popular tourist
area?
Students to choose.
Are there any limitations on the type of furniture and or materials we choose?
If it’s safe and ideal for the space. We want to think of real clients/people in the space.
