Course Description:
This course will give the overall picture of tourism. Topics covered in this course include the
definitions and historical development of man as agent of change with in the environment in the
introductory part of the course. Innovation, development and diffusion of various cultural elements
and institutions will be examined for their expression on the landscape. Reflection shall also be made
on the relationship between the geography of tourism and the geography of different cultural
elements (for example, Economy and other geographical phenomena), global tourism, factors
affecting tourism, and local tourism and its impact on development. It will emphasize on factors of
tourist demand, travel propensity and the supply sides of destinations and attractions. Therefore, this
course will enable the students to analyze business of tourism and demands, motivations tourism
management and tourism as a tool for development. The impact of tourism on physical cultural and
Economy will be also discussed.

Course Objective:
After Successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Understand the conceptual and historical development of tourism;
2. Distinguish the different types and forms of tourism;
3. Analyze the impacts of environments on tourism industry and vice-versa;
4. Examine the tourism demand , motivation and business;
5. Discuss the different types of tourism planning and development at various levels;
6. Elaborate the social, economic and environmental impacts of tourism. Evaluate the travel patterns tourism
and its impact on the development of a country; and
7. Assess the cultural Heritage and tourism development in Ethiopia; its challenges and Prospects.
