Hints for the Moodle problem

- 6 quizzes based on the exercises.
- Published in Moodle after each exercise class, open about 2 weeks (check the deadlines in
Moodle), the second deadline is 13.2.2024 at 23.59.
- Time limit 2 hours.
- In your answer, use point "." as decimal separator (not dot ",").
- Give the answer with asked number of decimals.
- Remember to check what is the asked unit of the answer.
- Use exact values as you proceed with the calculating.
- Moodle quizzes are part of the final grading in the course. Each quiz is graded.
- BH61A0201 Energy Economics: Final grading numerical, paper exam 80 % and moodle
quizzes 20 %.
- BH61A020E Energy Economics for EnTeDI: Final grading pass/fail. No exam. Lecture
problems and quizzes. To pass the quizzes you should earn at least 3 points out of the total
6.
- Save your calculations.

EXERCISE 2

1. Figure 1 shows the annual fluctuation of heat consumption of a community. Sketch

the annual load duration curve (pysyvyyskäyrä in Finnish) of heat consumption and
calculate

a) mean power
b) annual full-capacity operating hours (huipunkäyttöaika in Finnish)
c) capacity factor (käyttökerroin in Finnish)
d) annual heat consumption

2. Figure 2 shows the load duration curve of heat production of a heat power plant.
Heat is produced using two boilers: 5 MW peat boiler and 5 MW oil boiler. Peat
boiler is used in power range from 1 MW to 5 MW for basic heat production. Oil
boiler is used for producing the additional heat at times the heat power demand is
over 5 MW. Also, under 1 MW heat power demand, the heat is produced by oil
boiler.

Calculate
a) annual full-capacity operating hours of the entire power plant
b) annual full-capacity operating hours of the oil boiler
c) annual full-capacity operating hours of the peat boiler
