A hardened steel worm rotates at 1440 rpm and transmits 12 KW to a
phosphor bronze gear. The speed of the worm wheel should be 60 + 3%
tpm. Design the worm gear drive if an efficiency of at least 82% is
desired.

Design a bevel gear drive to transmit 10 kW power at 1440 rpm. Gear
ratio is 3, and life of gears is 10,000 hrs. Pinion and gear are made of C45

(iii) Heat dissipated by the fin per meter width.
Air at 290°C flows over a flat plate at a velocity of 6 m/s. The plate is 1 m

at a temperature of 70°C, estimate the rate of heat removed from the plate.

Water at atmospheric pressure is to be boiled in polished copper pan. The

Determine the area required in parallel flow heat exchanger to cool oil from
60°C to 30°C using water available at 20°C. The outlet temperature of the

caleulate the area required for a counter flow exchanger.
Calculate the following for an industrial furnace in the form of a black body
and emitting radiation at 2500°C (i) Monochromatic emissive power at
1.2 jm length. ii) Wave length at which the emission is maximum.
iii) Maximum emissive power iv) Total emissive power, and v) Total emissive
power of the furnace if it is assumed as a real surface with emissivity equal to

30°C. Determine the number of fins required, if ‘k’ of the fin material is
40 Wim K.

A shell and tube heat exchanger with 4 tube passes is used to cool hot water (15)
at 90°C at a rate of 10 kg/s using cold water available at 20°C. With the flow
rate of cold water was 5 kg/s the cold water outlet temperature was 70°C.
Investigate the variation of heat flow rate when the flow rate of cold water is
reduced to 4 kg/s, maintaining the inlet temperature and the hot water flow
rate to be the same.

motor running at 970 r.p.m., with the compressor speed being 330 r.p.m-

Design a spur gear drive for a stone crusher, where the pinion is
transmitting 30 kW at 1200 r.p.m. The gear ratio is 3, and the gears are
made of C45 steel. The drive is expected to work for 8 hours per day, six

Design a helical gear drive to transmit a power of 15 kW at 1400 r.p.m.
The drive should have a speed reduction of 3, a pressure angle of 20°,
and a helix angle of 15°. The material of both gears is C45 steel,

Design a pair of bevel gears to transmit 10 kW at a pinion speed of
