The Brown Executive Function/Attention Scales assess six clusters of executive functions commonly impaired in ADHD, including activation, focus, effort, emotion, memory, and action. The scales yield T-scores to indicate the severity of reported problems and provide multi-rater reports for comprehensive evaluation. They are used for screening, diagnostic evaluation, and monitoring treatment effectiveness, with formats available for various age groups and administration options.

Brown Executive Function/Attention Scales (Brown EF/A Scales)

Feature Details

Areas Assessed Assesses six clusters of executive functions often impaired in

ADHD:

1. Activation: Organizing, prioritizing, and initiating tasks.

2. Focus: Sustaining attention and shifting focus.

3. Effort: Regulating alertness, sustaining effort, and

processing speed.

4. Emotion: Managing frustration and modulating emotions.

5. Memory:1 Utilizing working memory and accessing recall.

6. Action2 (Adolescent & Adult Forms): Monitoring and self-

regulating action (related to hyperactivity/impulsivity).

Scoring Yields T-scores (M=50, SD=10) for each of the six clusters and
a Total Composite score.

T-scores indicate the severity of reported problems compared

to age-based and gender-based norms.

Interpretation Ranges for T-scores:

* 70 and above: Markedly atypical (very significant problem)

* 60-69: Moderately atypical (significant problem)

* 55-59: Somewhat atypical (possibly significant problem)

* 543 and below: Typical (unlikely significant problem)4

Reporting Provides a profile of the individual's reported functioning

across the six clusters and an overall indication of executive
function difficulties (Total Composite).

Multi-rater reports (Self, Parent, Teacher) can be generated to

compare perspectives.

Format Rating scales available in different forms for various age

groups:

* Parent (3-7 years, 8-12 years, 13-18 years)

* Teacher (3-7 years, 8-12 years)

* Self-Report (8-12 years, 13-18 years, 19+ years)

Administration Can be administered via paper-and-pencil or digitally through

the Q-global platform.

Focus of Items Focuses on the severity of specific problems rather than the
frequency of behaviors, allowing for a more accurate report of
the impact of difficulties.

DSM-5 Alignment Includes items related to DSM-5 ADHD symptoms as well as

other important aspects of executive function impairments not
fully captured by the diagnostic criteria.

Clinical Use Used for screening individuals who may benefit from ADHD/EF
assessment, as part of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation,
and for monitoring the effectiveness of interventions and
treatment.
