 Snipping tool can be used to copy and paste pictures from various sources.
 Pictures must be labelled (e.g. DIAGRAM 1, SKETCH 1, etc.). When referring to
the picture, use capital letters (e.g. Study DIAGRAM 2 and answer the following
questions.)

11. DASH OR HYPHEN

11.1 When the dash (–) is used, extra information is supplied.

[To type a dash, which is longer than the hyphen, insert the
ctrl-key and then press the ‘-‘ key (at the top right of the key board)]
11.1.1 TO INDICATE BEGINNING AND END
 E.g. lines A–D; essay of 400 to 450 words; write the word next to
the question number (1.1 to 1.5)
 No spaces appear on both sides of the dash.
11.1.2 TO ADD SOMETHING
 E.g. ‘Global children’s TV character – Pocoyo.’
 A space must appear in front of, as well as after using this dash.
11.2 The hyphen is used to join words which indicate one concept.
 E.g. mild-mannered; lift-off; make-up; all-purpose.
 The ‘-‘ key is found between the 0-key and the "=" key.
 No space is used, neither before, nor after the "-" key.

 Use the type used in the previous year's Gr 12 papers. Use them consistently.

13. USE OF CAPITAL LETTER WORDS

 All questions are indicated in capitals, e.g. QUESTION 1, QUESTION 2, etc.

14. BOLD AND ITALICS

 Bold is used to name a question, e.g. QUESTION 3.

 Bold is also used to indicate the total marks. (refer to No. 4. MARKS)
 The topic of the question only appears for some subjects.
Check the previous year’s question papers, e.g.
QUESTION 10: OTELLO – ESSAY QUESTION
 Italics are for: concepts, definitions, reference to words, the variables in
Mathematics (x) and names of books in sources. (or as in OTELLO above)

15. ORGANISING OF PAGES

 Sentences, tables and sketches are preferably not split across pages.
 As far as possible, keep a question/sub-questions together on one page.
 As far as possible, keep the questions about an extract, table or a diagram on
the same page as the extract/table/diagram.
 Do not waste unnecessary space.

16. MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS

 Give a clear instruction what to do.

For example: Select and write down the letter of the correct answer.
Nandi hid her diary under the ...
A mat.
B bag.
C bed.
D pillow.
 The ellipse (dots) shows that the sentence continues. Only 3 dots are used, with
a space before the 3 dots.
 A, B, C and D are aligned to the beginning of the previous sentence (Nandi hid
her ...).
 A, B, C and D are not followed by full stops.
 A full stop ends the sentence from the top. (Nandi hid her diary ...)
 If a section of multiple-choice questions is given, there should be a variety in the
letters of the answers, e.g. 80% of the answers should not be C.
 If a question ends with a colon, start the options with a capital letter with no
punctuation at the end, e.g.
3.2 Peter won a:

A Car
B Bike
C Bicycle
 The possible answers must be possible, e.g. “Run” would not be an option
above.

 A good practice in setting multiple choice questions, is to leave it till last. Gaps
in the content already set, could then be filled.
