REPORT ON THE STUDENT ATTRIBUTES FACILITATED BY THE

INSTITUTION
Kurukshetra University is a progressive institution having a rich legacy of high quality
multidisciplinary education, excellent academic ambience for honing technical skills, state of
art sports and cultural facilities for holistic development of students and robust outreach
ecosystem for creating responsible citizens. The University is taking up various strategies and
plans including skill development, multidisciplinary learning, pedagogy, and stakeholders‟
engagement etc. to meet the aspirations of young India in consistent with the
recommendations of NEP-2020.
Kurukshetra University has been doing continuous efforts for developing new and
innovative mechanism for the holistic development of its students. The University has a
large number of students from rural background. Their exposure to the global world in terms
of resources, opportunities, technologies etc. is limited. The University provides them various
platforms to identify and further sharpen their potential in areas of their interest including
sports, public speaking, creative writing, cultural, painting etc. Participating in these
activities provides a chance to the students for social interaction and to develop new
relationships. These activities play a vital role in creating a chance for the young students to
all around development. In this context, the University provides various platforms to the
students to participate in these activities at different levels.
The academic programmes offered by Kurukshetra University integrate
crosscutting issues relevant to professional ethics, Gender, Human values,
Environment and sustainability in the respective curricula. These help to develop
attributes like ethics, human values, and environment sustainability in students.

Communication Skills and Academic Personality:

 The University organizes „ROSTRUM- Annual Public Speaking Competition‟ in


three stages (department, faculty and University level) every year. The students are
judged by different committees at different stages that includes teachers, students etc.
The prizes are distributed to the winners by the Vice-Chancellor in a function
organized for this purpose. This platform provides a golden opportunity to students
to improve their communication skills as well as overall academic personality. This
exercise also inculcates the sense of healthy competition among the students.
 The talks/seminars delivered by the students inculcate academic capabilities as well as
confidence. The centres developed under RUSA-2.0 have been conducting various
training programmes which give exposures to various aspects to raise the academic
personality of the students. More than 8000 trainees have improved their overall
academic personality during the training with the centres for skill development,
entrepreneurship, corporate resource, continuing education and centre of sports
established under RUSA-2.0.
 The University provides career counseling as well as guidance for competitive
examinations to the students for developing the academic personality of the students.
 The University has conducted more than 250 workshops/seminars on
entrepreneurship, skill development and capacity building in order to improve the
academic personality of the students.
 The University organizes educational/cultural tours to places of educational
and historical importance for students. These tours develop leadership qualities,
promote team work and develop an attitude of cooperation among students in
addition to their academic benefit.
Research Aptitude:

In line with its VISION and MISSION statements, the University has given priority
and thrust to research in newly emerging as well as conventional fields of research, together
with promotion of scientific research. In order to develop the research aptitude among
students, the University facilitates the following:
 Research Aptitude is one of the Programme Outcomes (POs) for most of the
programmes offered by the University.
 There is provision of one semester project/training/dissertation component in the
professional programmes. During this period, students have to work independently on
some specific and well defined problem in the field. The dissertation work provides a
good opportunity to the students for solving the problem themselves under the
guidance of a faculty member.
 At the end of the project, a detailed project report is to be submitted and results are
presented in the form of open seminar/presentation which enhances their
communication skills.
 Some programmes have the provision of field training of the students. Students collect
and analyze the data themselves during these field training programmes that help to
generate interest in doing research.
 Ph.D. progressive seminars are open for all the students and research scholars
of the respective departments/institutes to develop research aptitude in the
students.
 The advanced learners among students are encouraged to participate in
conferences/seminars etc. Their names are recommended for the financial
support. The participation of students in conferences/seminars give them wider
exposure for developing research aptitude.
 Students of many programmes particularly professional programmes do
summer/winter training with the CSIR-labs/institutes and other organization to
get the exposure for doing research in the respective subjects.
 The departments organize guest/extension and inter-disciplinary lectures of
outside experts to give exposure to the students.
 The University has conducted 21 workshops/seminars on “Research
Methodology” for its students during the assessment period.
 The University has taken a lead in the country and is probably the only University in
the country to honour the outstanding Indian scientists at a grand scale through
prestigious Goyal awards instituted in 1992. These include four Goyal Prizes, one
each in the field of Applied Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical
Sciences; four Rajib Goyal Prizes for Young Scientists, one each in the discipline of
Applied Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences; and one
Goyal Peace Prize.
 A special session is organized for the students to discuss with the eminent
personalities/scientists who receive the Goyal prizes in order to inculcate research
aptitude in the students.
 The University has appointed an Honorary Professor  IPR and Technology Transfer
to help the Ph.D. students/faculty members for filing/publishing/granting the patents.
 The University has created an eco-system with 5 new research centres (viz. Advanced
Material Science, IT and Automation, Applied Biology in Environment Sciences,
Advanced Research in Earthquake Studies, and Excellence for Research on the
Saraswati River) to enhance the research aptitude of the students.
 A comprehensive “Policy for Promotion of Research” has been devised and adopted
by the University with main aim to promote research eco-system and conducive
environment for conducting quality research by the Ph.D. students as well as faculty
members.
 The University Library has membership of Shodhganga and subscription of Proquest Database
(literature, education and psychology etc), Scifinder, Emerald and Manupatra in order to boost
research activities in the campus.

Innovations
Kurukshetra University gives top priority for creating an eco-system for
innovation as well as transfer of knowledge in order to nurture students for
innovative ideas. The University has aligned itself to the vision of United Nations-
Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDG) 2030 as well as Startup India by
implementing the SDG Plan for the university and by creating Incubation Centre
namely Kuruksehtra University Technology Incubation Centre (KUTIC). The
objectives of KUTIC are:
 To motivate students and research scholars to translate their ideas into
products
 Develop an ecosystem to promote the utilization of expertise of the
faculty for mentoring the start-ups
 Rope in expertise of Alumni for providing a strong backbone to the
activities of start-up
 Provide networking with mentors and advisors from Industries
 Promote incubation of Science and Technology based start-ups

 KUTIC organized an Idea Innovation Challenge , „INNOVISION-2019‟ for


students, Alumni and research scholars was organized during Aug. 2019 to Feb.
2020 to support new and original ideas, which have potential for
commercialisation. 20 projects out of 50 recommended for grant on the basis of
their potential to address environmental issues, water problems, IOT, organic
farming, power electronics and innovative design. The funding for the projects
execution ranged from Rs 3000 to Rs 1.5 Lakhs. A cash prize of Rs. 70,000/-
for the First winner, Rs. 50,000/- for the second winner and Rs. 10,000 for the
third winner were announced.

 One of the winning team in Innovison-2019 has launched its startup „Livsmart
Automation and Security LLP‟ and is currently incubated in KUTIC.
 Livsmart in its journey has hired 7 interns from different departments of Kurukshetra
university and is striving to create job opportunities.
 To tap into the needs of the local industry , efforts have been made to develop a
symbiotic relationship between the Industries in Ambala and University by organising
a meeting between the representatives of Ambala Scientific Instruments
Manufacturers Association(ASIMA) and various university departments for mutual
growth and benefit of industries and academia, thereby developing strong industry-
academia interaction.
 Creation of a pool of mentors and advisors to support the incubatees and startups.
 Inviting startups proposals from time to time to support them through seed grant upto
25 lakhs.
 Formulation of Startup Policy and signing of MOU with Grassroots Innovation and
Augmentation Network (GiAN) Gujrat, Foundation for Innovation and Technology
Transfer (FITT) Delhi, Chandigarh Angels Network (CAN) Chandigarh.
 Registration on Startup India and KUTIC has its own website: www.kutic.rusakuk.in
 Creation of database of Faculty Mentors and Faculty co-ordinators
 An another incubation centre has been established by University Institute of
Engineering and Technology (UIET) at campus. This is sponsored by Department of
IT and Electronics, Govt. of Haryana.
Sports
Sports contribute to the development of personal and social values that are very
important in the educational process. Sports is a school where a player learns the
values like commitment, discipline, preservance, self-confidence, team work, learn to
compete, controlled success and failure etc.
Keeping in view the importance of sports, Kurukshetra University has included
the sports as an integral part of its educational structure since its inception in 1956.
 The University has the honour to produce 3 Padamshrees, 16 Arjuna Awardees,
6 Dronacharya Awardees, 1 Tenzing Norgay Awardee and 1 Major Dhyanchand
Awardee.
 Kurukshetra University is the only University of the state, which has the
distinction of winning the prestigious MAKA trophy (symbol of supremacy in
University Sports) way back in 1966-67, and consistently securing a place
among first three runners-up in the MAKA trophy during 2007-2022.
 In the second addition of “Khelo India University Games” (KIUG) (organized
by Sports Authority of India and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports) held in
2022, Kurukshetra University secured overall the 7th position in the country.
 The University has excellent infrastructure for sports activities. The
Directorate of Sports of the University has established the perfect path for the
development of University sports by adopting the professional approach.
 It provides the channels and ample opportunities to the budding athletes of
campus and affiliated colleges to perform at national and international level.
 Coaching camps of minimum 30 days for the University teams, prior to their
participation in the inter-University championships, are organized.
 The department sends about 80 teams consisting of about 800 men and women
players for participation in inter-University games and organizes 2-3 North
Zone/All India inter-University championship every year.
 The sports facilities include well maintained Sports Stadium, fully equipped
Gymnasium Hall, new Gymnasium Hall has been, Swimming Pool, Tennis
court, Basket Ball court, Hand Ball court, Badminton court, Volley Ball court,
Korf Ball courts, Hockey & Football playgrounds, shooting range and climbing
wall.
Cultural

 In order to nurture the cultural attribute of the students, the University has a
Department of Youth and Cultural Affairs for organizing various cultural
activities in the campus.
 The University has several auditoria of varied capacities. These include an
auditorium with capacity of 2000 persons, senate hall of 200 capacity, crush
hall of 250 capacity, Faculty lounge of 125 capacity, RK Sadan of 400
capacity, Community centre and open air theatre.
 The University organizes Ratnawali festival every year to show various forms
of Haryana‟s culture wherein students of campus as well as affiliated colleges
show there talent in various cultural activities.
 The “Ratnawali Festival”, a state-level mega cultural fest held on the occasion
of Haryana statehood day, has grown into a “Mahakumbh of Haryana
Sanskriti”

Ethics

 A course on „Research and Publication Ethics‟ has been incorporated in the


Ph.D. course work of all 49 Ph.D. programmes of the University.
 One of the Programme Outcomes (POs) stated in most of the programmes is on
„Ethics‟ i.e. Capability to identify and apply ethical issues related to one‟s
work, avoid unethical behaviour such as fabrication of data, committing
plagiarism and unbiased truthful actions in all aspects of work.
 In order to promote the professional ethics, the University has framed and
implemented Rules and Regulations for prevention of Plagiarism.
 The University has established „Srimadbhagvad Gita Addhyan Kendra‟ to
inculcate ethics and moral values among students.
 Some courses on professional ethics have been the part of curriculum of some
of the programmes. For example, course on Business Ethics in MBA
programme, Media Law and Ethics in BA (Mass Communication) programme,
Cyber Security in MCA programme, Ethics and values in B.Tech./M.Tech.
(Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering), courses in M.A. (Sanskrit), M.A.
(Philosophy), MA(Fine Arts), etc.
 The programmes offered by the University like Certificate course in yoga,
Diploma in yoga and applied Philosophy, PG diploma in yoga, PG diploma in
Budhist studies etc. have directly inculcate the concept of ethics and moral
values among students.
Human Values

 The mission statement of the University “To prepare a class of proficient


scholars and professionals with ingrained human values and commitment to
expand the frontiers of knowledge for the advancement of society” shows its
commitment to integrate human values in the curriculum.
 Women‟s Studies Research Centre (WSRC) of the University offer M.A.
(Women‟s Studies) as well as PG diploma in Women‟s studies. All courses of
these programmes addressed the gender related issues that has direct bearing on
developing attribute of human values in students.
 This centre also organizes various programmes in the campus to address the
human values and gender issues.
 Various courses in different programmes like M.A.(English), M.A. (Hindi),
M.A.(Economics), B.Ed., M.A.(Political Science), M.A. (Philosophy), M.A.
(Sociology), Master of Social Work etc. address the issues related to Human
values.
 The University has been organizing a signature Bhagwadgita theme based 3
days International Seminar every year since 2016 as part of larger
“International Gita Jayanti Mahotsav” organized annually by the Govt. of
Haryana. Every year the theme of seminar is carefully chosen on relevance of
Gita in different spheres of contemporary world including universal
brotherhood, peace, harmony and human values. During last few years, a
galaxy of distinguished academic and spiritual scholars from different faiths
have joined the deliberations providing a unique platform to develop human
values.
 The University conducts special induction programmes for all fresh students
which includes, among other things, special sessions by experts on the codes of
conduct, ethics, and human values.

National Values

 In order to sensitize students to constitutional values, rights, duties and


responsibilities, the University organizes different activities which includes
annual celebration of important national events like Samvidhan Diwas/
Constitution Day (26th November), National Voters‟ Day (25th January),
National Unity Day (31st October), etc. wherein a formal pledge is
administered to all students to adhere to their duties and responsibilities as
enshrined in the constitution.
 Under the initiative of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” by the Government of
India, the University organized a number of events to celebrate and
commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people,
culture and achievements.

 In commemoration of the completion of 150 years of the “first war of


independence 1857”, the University has established a museum dedicated to this
historic event which depicts the valour and sacrifice of our freedom fighters. It
has been spreading the waves of patriotism among the students.
 Department of Youth and Cultural Affairs (DYCA) of the University organizes
special events led by the Vice-Chancellor to pay floral tributes to the Father of
Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Pt. Jawaharlal
Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh on their respective
birthdays at specially built statues/busts on the University campus.
 The DYCA also organizes various cultural and patriotic events like Ratnawali
festival, cultural-patriotic evening “Ek Shaam Shaheedon Ke Naam”, etc.
 The University celebrates Important state, regional and national festivals (like
Teej, Holi, Lohri, Baisakhi, Deepawali, Christmas, Haryana day, Independence
day, Republic day, National Integration day, International Yoga day, etc.) with
great fervor which brings alive the basic national identity of “Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam”.
 The message of national unity is also spread among students by holding “run-
for-unity” rallies in the campus on the occasion of National Unity Day.
 Under the "Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” (EBSB) programme of the Union
Ministry of Education, Kurukshetra University is paired with Osmania
University, Hyderabad, Telengana, with main purpose of promoting national
integration through systematic exchange of students between the two
institutions in the cultural, literary and linguistic fields.
 The University also observes anti-terrorism day (21st May) where students and
staff take pledge to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence, to uphold the
fundamental values of peace and harmony, and to fight the forces of disruption
threatening human lives and values.

Social Responsibilities
Kurukshetra University has conducted large number of extension activities in
order to inculcate the sense of social responsibilities among students. These activities
have been conducted through NSS, Youth Red Cross (YRC), Women‟s Study
Research Centre and also by some departments of faculty of Social Sciences and
faculty of law. The extension activites in the neighbourhood community by active
participation of the students include the following:
 The University has adopted nearby villages for organizing various extension
activities.
 Masks and sanitizers were distributed to the villagers of the adopted villages.
 Students of the University participated in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
 One day camp on Nutrition, Immunity and Health was conducted at Village
Dayalpur. Students of the University conducted Nutrition survey at the village
as well as at their respective places.
 NSS volunteers celebrated Van Mahotsav by planting saplings in their
neighbourhood.
 NSS volunteers organized various activities including “30 days Fitness activity
through Yoga”.
 Blood donation camps were organized by NSS volunteers.
 Celebrated Road Safety week to make public aware of the traffic rules and fine
provisions.
 Celebrated Poshan Pakhwada in order to spread awareness among nearby
community on nutritional values, anemia, handwash and sanitation etc.
 Organized Vaccination camps on April 13, May 28 and August 10, 2021.
 Women Studies Research Centre (WSRC) of the University conducts various
activities including workshops, extension lectures and skill training on the
issues of wellness programs, crime against women, training in tailoring and
embroidery in nearby villages etc.
 Cleanliness campaigns by the university as a part of Swatch Bharat Abhiyan
 Beti bachao beti padao campaign, Gender sensitization program
 Awareness programs for Women Empowerment, Beti Bacho Beti Padhao,
health issues in rural areas.
 Finance education workshop.
 A workshop on water conservation has been organized in collaboration with a
Newspaper.
 Sensitization for financial literacy, demonetization, sanitization etc.
 Socio-economic house hold survey of a village in Jodhpur.

 Functional Legal Literacy Club – Students created awareness among the
villagers regarding the provisions and benefits of the Lok-Adalats.
 Students created awareness among the rural people regarding “Sukanya
Samridhi Account Yojana”, organizing intra moot court competition etc.
 Organizing para-legal voluntaries training camp
 Youth Red Cross Unit –Engaged in the activities like motivating the people to
follow the traffic rules, organized water preservation rally

Environment sustainability

 One of the Programme Outcomes (POs) stated in most of the programmes in


Science subjects is on „Science and Society‟ i.e. “Ability to apply reasoning to
assess the different issues related to society and the consequent responsibilities
relevant to professional scientific practices” has its bearing on Environment
and Sustainability.
 The course curriculum of some programmes like M.Sc. (Environmental
Science) and M.Tech.(Energy and Environmental Management) are devoted to
Environment and Sustainability. Some courses of M.Sc.(Tech) (Applied
Geophysics), M.Sc. (Applied Geology), M.Sc. (Geography), M.Sc. (Botany),
M.Sc. (Zoology) etc. also take care of issues of Environment and
Sustainability.
 The mission statement of the University “To prepare a class of proficient
scholars and professionals with ingrained human values and commitment to
expand the frontiers of knowledge for the advancement of society” shows its
commitment to integrate human values in the curriculum. The phrase „use of
knowledge for the advancement of society‟ in the mission statement depicts
integration of the issues related to environment and sustainability.
 The University has Horticulture as well as lands and farming department to maintain
beauty as well as for beneficial use of vacant land on the campus. About 50 acres of
land has been given under Community Forest Project to grow medical plants, orchard
and other trees with a view to maintain ecological balance as well as pollution free
atmosphere.
Connection with Cultural Heritage

 The university is committed to holistic education of young generation by


leveraging its past knowledge and traditions. The heritage is preserved,
showcased and students are encouraged to imbibe its best values through
immersive learning. Various platforms are provided to the students for mindful
interface with Indic socio-cultural values.. The students are expected to spread
the values so imbibed far and wide as proud, learned and informed Indians.
Inculcating human values in them as embodied in ancient Indian scriptures and
on connecting them to our rich cultural heritage, together with its systematic
preservation for future generations.

 The University has established a museum of Heritage of Haryana named as


“Dharohar” to preserve and showcase the artefacts associated with the rich and
varied culture of Haryana. On a mission spearheaded by the University, over
thousands of artefacts donated generously by the Haryanvi people, are
thematically exhibited in 50 sections in the museum.
 The museum is open to all and has very good footfall and is emerging as a must
see for the visitors to Kurukshetra city.
 Keeping in view the sanctity and importance of Holy Srimadbhagwad Gita for
Kurukshetra, the university offers one-year certificate course in
Srimadbhagwad Gita and its Gita Shodh Kendra is enagaged in research on
Gita.
 A signature Bhagwadgita theme based 3 days International Seminar is
organized by the university every year since 2016 as part of larger
“International Gita Jayanti Mahotsav” organized annually by the Govt. of
Haryana. Every year the theme of seminar is carefully chosen on relevance of
Gita in different spheres of contemporary world including universal
brotherhood, peace and harmony. During last few years, a galaxy of
distinguished academic and spiritual scholars from different faiths have joined
the deliberationsprovidinged a unique platform to Ph.D. students on the
campus.
 The Department of Ancient History, Culture & Archaeology has been the
actively researching on on history and culture of Haryana. It department has its
own Archaeological Museum showcasing the varied articles discovered in
archaeological excavations conducted by it in Bagwanpura, Daulatpur and Balu
in Haryana. The department is also associated with Rakhigarhi site.
 The oldest Department of on campus; Sanskrit, Pali & Prakrit was the first
postgraduate department established in 1956 and is offering specialized courses
on Vedic Studies and Indian Philosophy free of tuition fees.
 The Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies has been annually publishing
Prachi-Jyoti-Digest of Indological Studies since its inception which has a
worldwide circulation. The Institute has undertaken a major research project of
“Mahabharata Word Concordance” and has published fifteen volumes with
financial assistance from Ministry of Education through Rashtriya Sanskrit
Sansthan, New Delhi.
 The University has a collection of 15,000 rare manuscripts which have been
digitized.
 In commemoration of the completion of 150 years of the “first war of

 The University has established a multi-disciplinary Centre of Excellence for
Research on Saraswati River (CERSR). The University also provides

Leadership
The University provides various platforms to inculcate and develop leadership
quality in the students. The University has always ensured adequate student
representation in different committees.

 Ten students, one from each faculty, are nominated to the Students Grievance
Redressal Committee, which is a forum to discuss and to redress the grievances
of students on the campus.
 Two students are nominated to Internal Complaints Committee Against Sexual
Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, prohibition and Redressal)
(ICCASH).
 Representation of students is also ensured in the supreme bodies of National
Service Scheme and Youth Red Cross (Two each) as members of National
Service Scheme Advisory Committee, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra
and Youth Red Cross Executive Committee (University Level) of Kurukshetra
University, Kurukshetra.
 In addition, two students are nominated as members of National Service
Scheme (University Teaching Departments) Advisory committee and Youth
Red Cross Executive Committee (University Teaching Departments).
 The students are also the member of different Anti-ragging committees‟
operative on the campus.
 One student has also been nominated as a member of IQAC.
 Students are also nominated as members on Board of Residence, Health and
Discipline of the Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra.
 Two students are nominated as Gender Champions at University Level. For the
selection process of gender champions at University level, the constituted
selection committee include two students who are nominated members of the
selection committee.
 In addition to these bodies, students have wider representations in management
of different societies, clubs and cultural bodies. Two students are nominated as

Speaking Competition – ROSTRUM has one student judge on its panel during
Round-I competitions.
 In order to inculcate the leadership quality in the students, Kurukshetra
University Campus Student Council (KUCSC) has been formed as per decision
of Executive Council of the University. KUCSC consist of four office bearers
and five members elected by the Class Representatives from among
themselves. The Students‟ Executive Council is responsible to the Students‟
General Council comprising of all the elected CRs, Office Bearers &
Nominated Members.

Competitive and team spirit


The participation of the students in various activities on the various platforms
of public speaking, sports and cultural competitions inculcate the sense of healthy
competition as well as team spirit.
