Finite Square Well Quiz PH-3005D

This document is a quiz for a Computational Physics course at NIT Calicut, focusing on the Finite Square Well potential and its implications in quantum mechanics. It includes the time-independent Schrödinger equation, solutions for wave functions, and a transcendental equation for energy levels. Students are required to plot and estimate energy levels using the Bisection method while avoiding specific discontinuous points.

1. The Finite Square Well:

(
0, 0 ≤ x ≤ L,
V (x) = (1)
V0 , x < 0, x > L.

Plugging this potential into the time-independent Schrödinger equation,

ℏ d2
− ψ(x) + V (x)ψ(x) = Eψ(x), (2)
2m dx2
leads to the solution

αx

 x<0
ψ(x) = A sin kx + B cos kx, 0 ≤ x ≤ L (3)

 −αx
De x > L,

2αk 2mE 2m(V0 − E)
tan kL = 2 ; with k = ; and α= . (4)
k − α2 ℏ ℏ
You can obtain the energy levels by solving this transcendental equations.

Question: If we express energy as E = ϵβ with ϵ = 8mL2
, for a well with V0 = 2ϵ, the above
transcendental equation can be rewritten as
p
p β(2 − β)
tan π β = . (5)
β−1
There are two eigen energy levels for this well (Please note 0 < β ≤ 2). Make a plot to
identify the guess brackets for the energy levels β1 , β2 and use Bisection meths to estimate β1
and β2 with an upper bound on maximum absolute error = 10−5 . Print estimate, error in each
iteration.
Please note that the function is discontinues around β = 0.25 and β = 1. Please avoid these
points when you obtain the brackets.
