Fluid Mechanics Introduction

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids and the forces acting on them, focusing on properties such as density, viscosity, and pressure. Key principles include Pascal's Law in fluid statics and Bernoulli's Equation in fluid dynamics, along with the Reynolds Number to determine flow types. Applications of fluid mechanics are found in pipe flow, airflow over wings, and hydraulic systems.

INTRODUCTION TO FLUID MECHANICS

1. Definition:

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids (liquids and gases) and the forces on them.

2. Properties of Fluids:

- Density (rho)

- Viscosity (mu)

- Pressure (P)

3. Fluid Statics:

- Pascal's Law: Pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted undiminished.

4. Fluid Dynamics:

- Bernoulli's Equation: P + 0.5rhov^2 + rhogh = constant

5. Reynolds Number:

Re = rhovd / mu -> Determines flow type (laminar or turbulent)

6. Applications:

- Pipe Flow

- Airflow over wings

- Hydraulic systems
