DESIGN
THINKING Design thinking is a human-centered
approach to problem-solving that
encourages innovation through creative
and structured processes. It focuses on
understanding the needs of users,
generating ideas, and testing solutions in a
way that is both practical and adaptable.
This lesson introduces participants to the
principles of design thinking and how it
can be used to address social and
community challenges.
PRINCIPLES AND STAGES
Design thinking is a framework that emphasizes understanding
the user, redefining problems, and developing innovative
solutions. It is divided into five key stages.
Empathy: Understand the users and their needs
through observation, interaction, and engagement
Define: Clearly articulate the problem based on
insights gained during the empathy stage.
Ideate: Generate creative ideas and brainstorm
potential solutions.
Prototype: Build simple models of the solutions to
explore and test ideas.
Test: Implement the prototype with the users and
gather feedback to refine the solution.
IDENTIFYING AND DEFINING
PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY
The first step in design thinking is to identify and clearly define the
problems affecting a community, often through research and
engagement.
Observation and Interviews: Engage with community
members to understand their challenges from their
perspective
Root Cause Analysis: Investigate the underlying
causes of the identified problems, rather than just the
symptoms.
Problem Statement: Create a clear, concise problem
statement that guides the process of finding
solutions.
IDEATING AND PROTOTYPING
SOLUTIONS
Once the problem is defined, the next step is to generate ideas Prototyping: Develop basic
and create tangible prototypes for potential solutions. versions of the solutions—

without limitations. Creativity Tools: Use mind
maps, sketching, or other
creative methods to
visualize potential solutions.
TESTING AND REFINING
IDEAS THROUGH
FEEDBACK
After creating prototypes, they must be tested with
real users to gather feedback and make necessary
adjustments.
User Feedback: Engage the target
audience in testing the prototype to
see if it solves the problem as intended.
Iteration: Based on feedback, refine Final Solution: Continue to test and
the prototype by improving its design adjust until the solution is both effective
or function. and sustainable.
CASE STUDY
Joy, a social entrepreneur, wants to solve the problem of youth
unemployment in her community. She brings together a team of
like-minded individuals but struggles to find creative solutions that
can be effectively implemented.
Class Discussions
How can Joy apply the principles of design thinking to identify
the core problem and develop solutions?
After ideating and prototyping solutions, what steps should Joy
take to test and refine her ideas through community feedback?
