Tutorial 02

The document is a tutorial for a complex variable course at the University of Vavuniya, covering various problems related to complex functions, including proving the Cauchy-Riemann equations, analyzing continuity and differentiability, and determining analyticity of given functions. It also includes exercises on harmonic functions, analytic functions, and the use of formal operators in complex analysis. The tutorial consists of multiple problems that require mathematical proofs and justifications related to complex variables.

1. Let f be defined in the complex plane by

( 2 5
x y (x+iy)
x4 +y 10 if z ̸= 0,
f (z) =
0 if z = 0.

Prove that f satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann Equation at z = 0, where z = x + iy.

is f (z) differentiable at z = 0 justify your answer.
2. Let (

f (z) =
0 if z = 0.
Show that
(a) f (z) is continuous everywhere on C.
(b) the complex derivative f ′ (0) does not exist.
3. Determine whether each of the following functions is analytic on the disk D =
{z ∈ C : |z| < 2}. Explain why or why not.
(a) f (z) = z + z̄ 2 ,
(b) f (z) = (ex cos y − ex y sin y) + i(ex y cos y + ex x sin y).
4. (a) Explain why the function f (z) = 2z 2 − 3 − zez + e−z is entire.
(b) Let f (z) be an analytic function on a connected open set D. If there are two
constants c1 , c2 ∈ C, not all zero, such that c1 f (z) + c2 f (z) = 0 for all z ∈ D,
then f (z) is a constant on D.
5. Show that the Cauchy-Riemann equations hold for the functions u,v given by
x4 − 6x2 y 2 + y 4 4xy 3 − 4x3 y
u(x, y) = , v(x, y) = ;
(x2 + y 2 )4 (x2 + y 2 )4
where (x, y) ̸= (0, 0). In addition Show that u,v are the real and imaginary parts
of an analytic function f : C \ {0} → C.

not.

sin y + y cos y)ex .
9. (a) Let f : C → C and ω = Reiθ = f (z) = f (x + iy). Show that the Cauchy
Reimann equations become

R R
Suppose that f is an entire function and ϕ(x, y) = 2xy. Find R(x, y) and
hence f (z).
(b) Check whether the function g(z) = sin x cosh y + i cos x sinh y is entire or not.
10. Suppose that
u(x, y) = x3 − kxy 2 + 12xy − 12x
for some constant k ∈ C. Find all values of k for which u is the real part of an
analytic function f : C → C.
