Goal-Setting

Department of Computer Science

Instructor Julie Zillmer

Date 5/25/2025
Goal-setting has always played a big role in how I try to organize my life, but like many people,
I’ve had both successes and failures with it.

One time, I set a goal to wake up every day at 5 a.m. and study before going to work. I was really
motivated at first, but after a week, I started hitting snooze. Eventually, I gave up completely. Looking
back, I think I failed because the goal wasn’t realistic for my lifestyle. I didn’t break the goal down into
smaller chunks or give myself flexibility.

On the other hand, one goal I achieved successfully was learning important tools and skills for
data analysis. I studied and practiced using Spreadsheets, SQL, Python, and PowerBI. I stayed
consistent, followed a plan, and learned step-by-step. What helped me succeed was my genuine interest
in the topic, clear resources, and steady progress tracking. I enjoyed what I was doing, which kept me
motivated even during challenging parts.

From both experiences, I’ve learned that effective goal-setting helps since it brings clarity and
structure. When a goal is well-planned and realistic, it becomes easier to stay focused and motivated.
Good goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Which is the SMART
approach. They also need to connect to something that matters personally, not just something we think
we “should” do.

Based on this reflection, here are my current goals:

 Short-term goals: Complete certifications in CompTIA A+, Linux+, Network+, and Security+. I
will dedicate specific study hours each week and aim to complete each certification one by one,
with realistic timeframes.
 Mid-term goals: Work toward advanced certifications like CISSP, CISM, CISA, GPEN, CEH, CCNA,
and CCNP. I will continue building my knowledge base and gain hands-on experience to meet
the eligibility requirements for each certification.
 Long-term goals: Successfully graduate from the University of the People (UoPeople) with a
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I will stay on track by taking 3-4 classes each term,
actively participating in discussions, and completing all assignments on time.

Goal-setting isn’t just about writing things down, it’s about being honest with yourself, planning
realistically, and staying flexible. I’m still learning, but I’ve seen how powerful it can be when done right.
