Veneration without Understanding- Quiz
1. What theoretical underpinnings did Prof. Renato Constantino employ in his essay
"Veneration Without Understanding," and which specific aspects of Rizal's life and ideology did
he emphasize?
● I think Prof. Renato Constantino used a historical and political approach in his essay
“Veneration Without Understanding”. He looked at Rizal’s life in the context of the
Philippine Revolution and how his ideas influenced the country’s fight for independence.
Prof. Constantino focused on Rizal’s reformist mindset—how he wanted change through
peaceful means rather than revolution. He also pointed out that Rizal was against the
Katipunan’s armed uprising, which made some people question if he truly supported
complete independence at that time.
2. How does the title "Veneration Without Understanding" reflect society's fundamental beliefs
about Rizal as a national hero? Do you agree with Prof. Constantino’s critique? Why or why
not?
● The title means that many Filipinos honor Rizal without really understanding his true
beliefs and actions. People see him as a hero without questioning if he was the best
choice for the role. Rizal is often portrayed as the ultimate hero, but we don’t always
discuss his limitations or the other figures who also fought for our freedom.I partly agree
with Prof Constantino, Rizal is a great hero, but we should also recognize other
revolutionaries like Andres Bonifacio, who took a more active role in fighting for
independence. However, I also think that Rizal’s intelligence, writings, and influence
played a huge role in shaping the country, so his heroism is still valid.
3. What are the key criticisms Prof. Constantino raises about Rizal in his essay? Explain these
criticisms and their implications for how we view Rizal's role in Philippine history.
● Prof.Constantino criticized Rizal for being a reformist instead of a revolutionary. He
argued that Rizal wanted the Philippines to have equal rights under Spain instead of
complete independence. He also mentioned that Rizal was against the Katipunan’s
revolution, which some believe weakened the movement. This changes how we see
Rizal because it shows that he was not a leader of the revolution but more of an
inspiration for it. It makes us question if he should be considered the greatest hero or if
other figures like Bonifacio deserve the same recognition.
4. In what ways can the arguments presented in "Veneration Without Understanding" be
connected to contemporary issues in Philippine society, such as nationalism, identity, and
colonial mentality?
● Prof.Constantino’s ideas connect in today's issues because many Filipinos still struggle
with colonial mentality—we admire foreign culture more than our own. Just like how we
were taught to venerate Rizal without question, many people also accept Western
standards of beauty, education, and success without thinking critically. This also relates
to nationalism. Some people think being nationalistic means just memorizing history or
celebrating heroes, but true nationalism should be about understanding our history
deeply and making real efforts to improve the country. Instead of just idolizing Rizal, we
should reflect on his and other heroes’ ideas and apply them to today’s struggles, like
poverty, corruption, and lack of education.
