Lab Sheet 03 - COA

The document is a lab sheet for a Computer Organization & Architecture course at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. It contains a series of questions related to calculating the capacities and specifications of various RAM and ROM chips, as well as determining maximum accessible memory sizes based on different address and data bus configurations. The questions require calculations involving bits, bytes, and address lines for different memory setups.

Lab Sheet 03
IIC 1082 – Computer Organization & Architecture

Question 1:

Determine the capacity of a 4MB × 16 RAM chip. How much total storage (in bytes) does this
RAM chip provide?

Question 2:

A memory chip is labeled as 512K × 8. How many bits and bytes of total storage does it have?

Question 3:

A RAM module has the specification 1M × 32.

• How many data lines are required for this memory chip?
• What is its total storage capacity in bytes?

Question 4:
A ROM chip is marked 2K × 4.

• What is the total storage size in bytes and how many address lines are needed?

Question 5:

You are given a RAM chip labeled 8K × 16.

• Calculate the total capacity in bits, bytes, and the number of addressable locations.
Example :-
✓ The machine with a 16-bit Data Bus and 32-bit address bus. Calculate the
maximum accessible memory size or storage of main memory .

Accessible storage
= 232 * 16 bits
= 8GB

Question 1:

A processor has a 24-bit address bus and an 8-bit data bus. Calculate the maximum accessible
memory size of the system.

Question 2:

The system has a 32-bit data bus and a 30-bit address bus. The processor accesses memory in 4-
byte words. Calculate the maximum accessible memory.

Question 3:

A computer has a 16-bit address bus and a 16-bit data bus. If the memory is word-addressable (1
word = 2 bytes), find the maximum size of accessible memory.

Question 4:

A microcontroller has a 20-bit address bus and an 8-bit data bus. Memory is byte addressable.
Calculate the maximum accessible memory size.
Question 5:

A system uses a word-addressable memory where each word is 4 bytes. The address bus is 28
bits wide. Calculate the maximum accessible memory.

Example:-
A processer’s maximum memory is 4GB and it accessible memory size of data bus is a word (a
word consists of 2 bytes) . Calculate the number of bits of the address bus to achieve maximum
capacity of memory of the processer once?

Question 1:
A processor has a maximum memory capacity of 8 GB and accesses memory using 4-byte
words. What is the minimum number of bits required for the address bus?

Question 2:
A system has word-addressable memory where 1 word = 2 bytes. If the address bus is 30 bits,
what is the maximum accessible memory capacity?
Question 3:

A processor has 4 GB of memory, and the data bus size is 16 bits (2 bytes). The memory is byte
addressable. What is the number of address lines (bits) needed?
Question 4:

A machine uses word-addressable memory. Each word = 8 bytes. The system can access up to 64
GB of memory. What is the address bus size?

Question 5:
A processor supports a maximum memory of 2 GB, and each word is 2 bytes. If the memory is
word-addressable, how many bits are required in the address bus?
