1. Introduce

A pile integrity test (also known as low strain dynamic test, sonic echo test, and low
strain integrity test) is one of the methods for assessing the condition of piles or shafts. It is
cost effective and not very time consuming.
The test is based on wave propagation theory. The name "low strain dynamic test" stems
from the fact that when a light impact is applied to a pile it produces a low strain. The impact
produces a compression wave that travels down the pile at a constant wave speed (similarly
to what happens in high strain dynamic testing). Changes in cross sectional area ‐ such as a
reduction in diameter ‐ or material ‐ such as a void in concrete ‐ produce wave reflections.
This test is standardized by ASTM D5882 Standard Test Method for Low Strain Impact
Integrity Testing of Deep Foundations.

2. PIT Equipment

DATA COLLECTOR:Model PIT‐FV, [Link],: 2777C

ACCELOMETER;[Link].: 18839; Calibration Factor: 18.4 g/V
INSTRUMENTED HAND HAMMER; [Link].: 26321; Calibration Factor: 1175 g/V
The special equipment “PIT collector” from Pile Dynamics, Ins., USA, is used for testing
with the following parts:
- 01 Accelerator;
- 01 Hand held hammer;
- 01 Monitor;
- 01 Special software
The main function of the monitor is to receive and storage test data (measure signals) as
well as details of test pile driving.

3. Objectives Of Testing

Pile Integrity test is able to analyse acoustic amanolies correcsponding to the following:
- Pile Toe level.
- Shaft restrainst.
- Over break.
- Crack.
- Reductions in section.
- Zone of Poor quality concrete.

4. Test procedure and setup

For cast in place piles, integrity testing shall not be performed until the concrete has
cured for a minimum of seven (7) days unless otherwise approved by the engineer. The pile
head shall be free from water, dirt or other debris. The concrete at the pile top surface must

be relatively smooth and provide sufficient space for attaching the motion sensing device
and for the hammer impact area.
This procedure is performed with a hand held hammer to generate an impact,
an accelerometer or geophone placed on top of the pile to be tested to measure the
response to the hammer impact, and a data acquisition and interpretation electronic
instrument.
A stress wave( sound wave) is introduced into the pile by means of a hammer blow on
the pile head.
This stress wave travels at the speed of sound to the pile toe and reflects back to the pile
head.
The response of the pile head, as a result of hammer blow and reflections, is measured
with an acceleration transducer. The acceleration is intergrated and presented as a velocity
signal.
For each pile at least 3 hammer blows are applied to the pile head and the result are
presented as 3 trace in a [Link] proof the quality of testing the 3 traces should be
similar.

Testing the pile length (L) shall be calculated L=C*T/2 with:

Where: C‐ Velocity of longitudinal wave in concrete.

T‐ Time for signal to travel to and from measured feature.
a) Preparation works:
 Removing the pour quality concrete at the pile driving top up to the satisfied
concrete.

Using the grinder to smooth uneven surface at 4 point for D1200mm. (see Figure 2).

b) Testing at site
The test is carried out as follows:
 Input information of test pile driving (pile driving name, length, diameter);
 Put the accelerometer on the centre of one testing location to ensure that
accelerometer's axis is perpendicular to the pile driving surface;
 The other locations are slightly tapped by the hammer with at least 3 numbers of
hammering for each location.

5. Analysis of test data

The received data from site measurement is transferred to a computer to be further
analyzed by special software. The analysis is carried out as follows:
 Based received wave, determining the integrity and defects (if any) of pile driving;
 Determining the typical wave by cooperation of received wave pile driving with
combination of actual soil conditions;
 Listing the pile driving having wave pile different from typical one, especially ones
having strong reflected wave;
 Determining the causes (due to soil conditions, quality of concrete pouring, quality of
connection welding, cracks) these differences.

6. Results‐Report
 Result
The test results are presented in the form of wave velocity pile driving and Summarized Test
Results
Pile integrity result are presented on table and [Link] data for each pile:
 Pile Name
 Date Collected
 Pile Length‐as record on site
