Technology - Science

The document outlines the objectives of technology education, emphasizing the understanding of technology's role in our lives and the five areas of technology: communication, construction, manufacturing, energy/power/transportation, and biotechnology. It explains the Engineering Design Loop, a systematic approach used to solve problems through eight steps, from identifying the problem to redesigning the solution. Examples of each area of technology are provided to illustrate their applications in real-world scenarios.

Technology Education

Objectives

Understanding what
technology is and how it works
in our lives.

Identify the 5 areas of

technology and know the
definitions

Understand the Engineering

Design Loop and the steps
Technology Word Activity
What is Technology?

Technology = Knowledge and the use of resources to meet human needs

and solve problems.

If someone has a problem or a need, we need to come up with a

Solution.

Ex: Covid19

Car Safety
What is Science?

Science = Study of natural things and why they happen the way they
do.

Learning more about things that already exist.

Ex: Space

Earth

Covid19
5 Areas of Technology

Communication: Changing information into messages to be

transmitted.

Construction: Using goods and materials to build something on site.

Manufacturing: Using materials and processes to produce products

that can be used elsewhere.

Energy, Power & Transportation: Converting energy into mechanical,

fluid and electrical power.

Biotechnology: Any technology dealing with living things.

Areas of Technology Examples

Communication: Phones, computers, pictures

Construction: Houses, stores, schools
Manufacturing: Food, toys, chairs
Energy, Power & Transportation: Cars, trucks, power plants
Biotechnology: X-ray, MRI, fertilizers

solution to a problem.
Engineering Design Loop

Step 1: Identify the Problem: you have to know and figure out what the
problem is first.

Step 2: Research: Always step two. We must learn about the problem
before we can try to fix or solve it. Very important step.

Step 3: Develop Possible Solutions: Time to think about possible ways to

fix or solve the problem. Remember, these are just some possibilities.

Step 4: Select the Best Possible Solution: Now we can pick the solution
to the problem that we think will work best.
Step 5: Construct a Prototype: It’s now time to create a prototype. This
will allow you to see what the solution will look like.

Step 6: Test and Evaluate: Now that the prototype has been completed,
it is time to test and evaluate your work.

Step 7: Communicate the solution: This step means you are finished.
The product is complete, and the problem has been solved.

Step 8: Redesign: Can you improve it? Can you make changes? This step
allows you to go back through the loop and improve your product.
