LR Guide Expt 4

This document outlines Experiment 4 focused on the rotational motion of a rigid body, detailing the objectives, theory, apparatus, and procedure for measuring the moment of inertia of a fly-wheel. It includes steps for setting up the apparatus, recording measurements, calculating values, and analyzing results through graphing and comparison with theoretical values. The experiment also addresses observations, calculations, discussions on errors, and a conclusion regarding the success of the experiment.

Figure 4.2

1. The apparatus is set up as in Figure 4.2.

2. The diameter, d of the axle is measured and its radius, R is calculated.

3. The falling slotted mass m is recorded.

4. A fixed point at a height h above the floor is chosen. Height, h is recorded.

5. The slotted mass, m is released from the fixed height h after the string has been wound
around the axle.

6. The time, t for the slotted mass, m to reach the floor is recorded.

7. The linear acceleration, a, tension, T and angular acceleration,  are calculated using
equations 4.5, 4.1 and 4.6 respectively.

8. Steps (3) to (7) are repeated for at least six different slotted mass, m.

9. The data is tabulated.

10. A graph of  against T is plotted.

11. The moment of inertia of the fly-wheel, I is determined from the gradient of the graph.

12. The moment of inertia of the fly-wheel, I is compared to the standard value.

| I experiment  I theory |
Percentage of difference =  100 %
I theory
