Student ID: …………………… Name: ……………………………………

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY – Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Engineering Metrology and Measurement Systems – MECH 6491 – 2022
Assignment #1
Due date: 08th October, 2024
Instructions: This assignment represents a significant part of the course requirements.
This assignment requires individual work only. Produce the completed assignment before
the deadline – hand written. You will need to write your student ID and name on all
pages of your submission, including the rough work papers. (You do not need to redraw
any part of the problem. You can fill the answers in the print out of this paper. However,
submit together all the calculations along neatly stapled together)
Note: Submit your work with the EXPECTATION OF ORIGINALITY form duly filled.

Question No 1: (14 Marks)

Using the fit tables, complete the following (first column filled as example)

H7/p6 10.015 10.000

-0.024 0
10.024 10.015
Student ID: …………………… Name: ……………………………………

Question 2 (6 Marks)
In the following figure, add
the tolerance zone and limits
of size for both parts. You
only need to draw the portion
of the part that has geometric
tolerance specified. You need
not reproduce the whole part.
Question 3 (10 Marks)
Calculate the minimum possible distance (LA) in the following drive assembly. For the
functionality of this drive assembly, under varying conditions of temperature fluctuation,
there needs to be a minimum gap of .05inches between points L and A. Comment on the
design tolerances based on the worst case analysis, if it will serve the purpose.

1 AB Bearing (width) 0.1969 ± 0.0005
2 BC Washer (width) 0.0100 ± 0.0010
3 CD Coupler (width) 0.7260 ± 0.0070
4 DE Spacer (Width) 0.2400 ± 0.0050

Question 4 (5 Marks)
Calculate the LA for the previous drive assembly, using the statistical method of
tolerance analysis. Comment on the new design tolerances with respect to the worst case
analysis from the previous problem.

Question 5 (5 Marks)
You need to build a machine vision system to inspect a part. You have a 100 mm focal
length lens, a CCD sensor (6.4mmx4.8mm) and the object distance needs to be 1 meter.
a. How far should the CCD sensor be from the lens?
b. If the part is 20 mm in dia, what will be size of the object on the ccd sensor?
c. What will be the maximum size of an object that can be seen completely in
the CCD sensor?
