JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Shop Engineer


DEPARTMENT: Machine Shop
REPORTS TO: Machining Manager

DEFINITION:
Shop Engineering defines and works out how the parts will be machined on the machining line
including design of jigs and fixtures, and aligned to support the speed of the machining line.
Review efficiencies and eliminate waste within the machining process to deliver high quality
products/components to clearly defined standards.

POSITION FUNCTION
Responsible for implementation of machining processes and procedures, leading productivity
improvements with project based activities, including new product introduction and manufacturing
cell design to reduce waste, improve quality and safety, and reduce operating costs. Manage
KPIs and ensure preventative actions are taken to maximise success. Work on many phases or
sub-tasks of machining or entire machining of moderate complexity, with results impacting on
machining completion. Work under general supervision, reviewed at project milestones and/or on
completion by Machining Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

1. Identify machining needs for machined parts.


2. Design new machining systems and processes and provide facilities & methods to
ensure the cost effective integration of new products or for the improvement of existing
ones into machining operations
3. Assist with shop floor layout and cell designs
4. Design fixtures and tooling for machining tasks
5. Generating machining documentation such as set up sheets, routing and machining
instructions
6. Reduce variability in machining by providing standard work methods and work
instructions
7. Ensure machined parts quality meets specifications required
8. Oversee installation of machinery and equipment
9. Maintain statistical records
10. Improve machining efficiency by analysing and planning work flow, space requirements
and equipment layout
11. Remove waste from the processes
12. Organise plant start-up and shut-down schedules to ensure minimum loss of machining
time
13. Plan and organise maintenance
14. Respond to breakdowns
15. Report down time and possible trends
16. Support and lead continuous improvement, problem solving and process improvement
activities
17. Carry out FMEAs, (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) process documentation and implement
improvements
18. Poka Yoke (error proofing) where possible to prevent errors
19. Investigate machining and process issues providing technical support and training
20. Keep up with current and developing engineering trends
21. Undertake special projects as required

22. Contribute to continuous improvement activities
23. Quality control of work by appropriate reviews
24. Support and lead process improvement activities
25. Write reports and present progress at project meetings and to clients
26. Achieve goals within time frame
27. Conduct benchmarking studies to determine best practices/designs and future trends
28. Plan projects or subtasks so they may be tracked and presented
29. Manage the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
30. Attend various meetings and action/communicate instructions
31. Produce written reports and make presentations
32. Undertake continuous training and development
33. Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION

1. Minimum of five (5) years of college or equivalent technical diploma.


2. Two (2) or more years' experience in design drafting, production planning, or assembly
work.

3. Ability to read and interpret blueprints to the extent required to write manufacturing
procedures with adequate clarity and detail for shop use.
4. Good verbal and written communication skills.
5. Ability to use CAD
6. Ability to design processes and layouts
7. Experience of FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), Kaizen/A3 (continuous
improvement and problem solving)process improvement and Poka Yoke (error
proofing) techniques

Physical Requirements:
Extensive walking outside to different Company buildings so must be able to tolerate extreme
weather conditions; intermittent periods of sitting at computer; twisting, turning, reaching, and
bending;

Work Environment:
1. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an
employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
2. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, humid conditions, fumes
or airborne particles, flying metal burrs and chips and possible chemical irritants such as
water-based coolants, hydraulic oils, degreasing soap and mineral spirits. The noise level
in the work environment is usually loud.
