The specifications for weight loss apply both to heated and unheated specimens.
Only surface corrosion is permissible – no pitting.
The test object temperature must not change by more than 20 K over a test duration of 30 h.
6.1.5 Residual silicate content after repeated dynamic corrosion test (Volkswagen high-
temperature test system), types C, G, H, J, and L only
The concentration is 40 vol% of the coolant additive.
Repeat the FVV high-temperature test with the same liquid, but with a new Al test object. After the
second test, it is not the corroded amount of the Al test object that is measured. In this case, the
residual silicate content in the liquid is the decisive factor.

– Resting test object EN AC-Al Si10Mg(Cu)

7 Requirements for the water used as mixing water for factory filling and „ready-to-
use“ coolants
The mixing water to be mixed with coolant additives must always meet the requirements specified
in TL 52541. Deviations from these requirements are only permissible following the approval of ex-
ceptions by the person responsible for fuels, coolants, fluids, and lubricants at the respective
brand. The exclusive use of demineralized water, as well as a mixture of potable water and demin-
eralized water, to adhere to the required limits as per TL 52541, table „Composition and require-
ments“ is permissible.

10 Notes on testing
10.5 Stability
Deviating from ASTM D4340, use synthetically hard water as per FVV, guideline R530 [1].
The concentration is 40 vol%.
Deviating from the ASTM standard specified above, the test duration is increased to 1 000 h when
testing the long-term stability (types J and L only).
10.8 Oxidation stability after aging as per ASTM D4340, (type L only)
Use 40 vol% of coolant (balance of distilled water) for this test. Use EN AC-Al Si10Mg(Cu) as the
test object material. Set the pressure such that no boiling occurs during the specified test duration.
Evaluate the test objects gravimetrically and visually after the testing. Before and after the testing,
analyze the test liquid beyond the requirements specified in table 17. In particular, document possi-
ble corrosion and oxidation products and the content of inorganic corrosion inhibitors. Excessive
polymerization of coolant components under the test conditions specified in table 17 is not permis-
sible.
Page 23
TL 774: 2024-06
Fill a 250-ml coolant specimen (50 vol%, balance of distilled water) into a beaker (400 ml, borosili-
cate glass, high form) and place this into an oven, pre-heated to 200 °C. Leave the beaker in the
drying oven until all the liquid has completely evaporated.
NOTE: Evaporation refers to the heating of a chemical solution with the objective of separating
the solvent mixture, in this case, e.g., water-glycol, from the dissolved substance. It remains as a
solid residue as long as the substance is not volatile.
After the beaker has cooled down to room temperature in a suitable desiccator, weight it using a
calibrated analytical balance (the beaker must initially be weighed when empty, before being filled
with the coolant specimen). The difference between both weights is the residue content in g of the
250-ml specimen. Multiply the determined difference (residue) in g by the factor 4.
The calculated result is equal to the total residue in grams per 1 l of coolant (cold-country concen-
tration).
After successfully evaluating the total residue formation, top up the beaker containing the residue
with 250 ml of distilled water and bring about a solution again using a magnetic stirrer (magnetic
stir bar 40 mm × Ø 8 mm) for 1 h at 60 °C and 600 rpm.
Then analyze the liquid phase (complete analysis and physical properties such as pH value and
reserve alkalinity). Present the results in comparison with a fresh specimen.
Document the whole test and the test results with photos.
Page 24
TL 774: 2024-06
Stir 0,3 g KAlF4 (in powder form) into 300 ml of test coolant (40 vol%, balance of distilled water)
using a magnetic stirrer (magnetic stir bar 40 mm × Ø 8 mm) for 24 h at a test solution temperature
of 70 °C and 600 rpm. After that, transfer the complete test solution (including any sedimented
components) to a suitable laboratory glass flask, seal the flask, and age the solution in a drying
oven for 336 h (14 days) at 90 °C.
Determine the pH value and the reserve alkalinity after the following steps:
– After producing the 40-vol% solution
– After cooling down in the 24-h stirring test
– After cooling down in the 336-h aging test
Then analyze the liquid (complete analysis). Present the results in comparison with the fresh speci-
men not subjected to any testing.
