SOFTWARE

Hard ware
• Last week we looked at hardware which covered
the physical components of a system, now we
know when people speak of a hardcopy (physical
print out) and soft copy (document seen on screen)
what they are referring to.
• This week we go into the world of software and this
will take a few weeks because this is where we look
at productivity tools. Our focus will be on Excel and
a brief look at statistical Software
TYPES OF SOFTWARE
• There are 2 types of software
• System Software (engineered to run the computer)
o Operating Systems
o Utilities

• Application Software (designed for a specific

purpose)
o Suites
o Custom
o Packages
Popularity of Microsoft
• With the launch of Windows 95, Microsoft became
the leader in productivity tools, they formed
partnerships with leading organizations to make
Microsoft the business standard but there were
other productivity tools available and some of them
are free:
• Lotus symphony
• Free office
• Open Office
• Google Docs
Productivity tools
• Microsoft office is an application package,
containing applications/productivity tools mainly
used in business such as

o Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel MsExcel/excel

Microsoft Word MSWORD / word

Microsoft Power Point Power Point / PPT

Microsoft Publisher Pub\Publisher

Activity 1
• On the previous slide is a table of common
applications available in Microsoft. Complete the

Excel
• This week the focus is on Excel and we have a
project to work on from here we will look at
common activities in excel and use links to sites with
important information. We will look at:
o Formatting
o Formulas
o Functions
o Charts
o Printing
o Adding and deleting rows
o Other basic components of excel

Excel Basics
• Excel is spread sheet program designed for
completing calculations, a book open with 3 sheet
but more can be added.
• In excel we enter numbers and text into cells (boxes
on the page)
• Text by default goes to the left of the cell, numbers
go to the right.
• We use formulas and functions for calculations
• We use graphs for presentations, these graphs can
be copied to other applications.

Save / Rename an Excel
Document
• As soon as you start working on a document is it s a
good idea to save it and continue to save it
incrementally as you work.
• Menu bars are arranged to be intuitive meaning you
should find the option you are looking for based on the
name of the menu --- e.g
• If you want to open a file you go to the FILE option on
the menu bar then find the word OPEN and look for the
workbook/document you want.
• There are of course other ways to accomplish task and
as you use the computer you will learn all the ways, the
objective is getting the specific task done.
Functions and Formulas
• Remember excel is use for calculations we use
functions and formula to complete these
calculations, please reviews to

Statistical Software
• These are special programs used for analysis of
statistics and econometric analysis.

o There are many available packages but the most popular is SPSS can be
computed using Excel especially since the 2010 version but there are
limitations so most serious statisticians would stick to software designed for
the purpose .
Statistical Software
Activity 2
• Some examples of this type of software are :

o DOE
o Xlisp-Stat
o Chronux
o Dap
o SAS/ STAT
o Gnu Octave

For your activity find out the type of statistical data the software is used to
generate. For Example: Chronux is used for neurobiological data
Closing
• This was a review of excel with the intention of providing
tools needed to complete your activities this week.
• You are always free to use other sites to find resources to
learn new skills and it would be great if you share.
• Your version of excel may be different but some items
will be the same, you can also use new skills to search for
the same feature in the version of Office you are using.
• Remember Excel can be used for statistical data but
that is not its main function hence the introduction of
specific applications for that purpose.
Questions/ comments
• Please post questions and comments so we can all
benefit.
• Good luck in your first graded practical activity.
