LESSON PLAN
Foreign Teacher: Mr. Kamarudin Walis Kamid
Subject: Mathematics
Grade and Section: 5/6
Projected Timeframe: 1 hour
Topic: Multiplying Decimals

I. Objectives

Students will be able to;


 apply knowledge of multiplying integers to multiplying decimals,
 use compensation to solve decimal multiplications,
 apply number sense to correctly place the decimal point in a decimal multiplication,
 estimate the product of two decimals and use this to correctly place the decimal point in a
calculation.
 The students will be able to multiply numbers with decimals using the standard algorithm.
 Students should already be familiar with
 multiplying by 10 and 100 by moving digits to the left,
 dividing by 10 and 100 by moving digits to the right,
 reading and writing decimals with up to two decimal places,
 using compensation in a calculation (making an adjustment to a calculation to make the
numbers easier and then compensating for this by adjusting the answer at the end).

And it’s always important to remember some keywords the remind us that we want to multiply,

III. Introducing the Lesson

In today’s lesson students will be learning how to multiply numbers that have decimals. students
will be applying their knowledge of decimals to calculate the total amount.
I begin today’s lesson by memorize the numbers from 1 to 100, memorize the English alphabet,
days of the week, months of the year, 8 planets in the solar system and the 10 ASEAN
country. Because math is not only about number is all about letters and start with English
conversation.
IV. Demonstrating and Practicing the Concept

In order to introduce the concept of multiplying decimals I introduce first the vocabulary word.
I gave an example on white board. After I give the example, I ask the students to go to the front
and answer the question written in the white board.
Okay so far who can share their thinking on how we multiply numbers with decimals?

I use the same process when completing the second portion. After having students share their
work, I ask students to think about the similarities and differences of multiplying decimals and
adding/subtracting decimals. I have students share responses first with their seat mate and then
have them share out to the whole group.

My goal is that students are able to amass that when you multiply decimals you have to count the
number of decimal places in the factors and then put that number of decimal places into the
product. This is different from adding/subtracting decimals in which you have to line up the
decimal and bring the decimal down into the answer.

Use these free starter questions to:

a) Get students thinking about how changing one number in a calculation effects the answer;

b) Explain that if we know the answer to one calculation, such as 32 × 46, we can use this to work
out the answers to related calculations involving decimals, such as 3.2 × 46, by looking at how the
numbers have changed. If one of the numbers gets 10 times bigger, the answer also gets ten
times bigger;

c) Check students can multiply two- and three-digit numbers, so that they could calculate the
answer to an initial calculation, and then use this to work out related decimal calculations;

These activities require students to multiply decimals together, without being given an initial,
related, calculation to help them get started:

This means that when we multiply two decimal numbers together, we are still just multiplying two
factors.

And how do we indicate multiplication?

When multiplication was first introduced to us, we always used the “x” symbol to indicate
multiplication. But as we progress toward Algebra, we will need to add a raised dot and
parentheses to our notation.

VI. Process of Learning Management

How to Multiply Decimals Step by Step?

So, now that we know our vocabulary and our notation, how do we multiply decimals?

With three easy steps:

First, we write each factor vertically, placing the number with the most digits on top, lining up the
last digits on the right and ignoring the decimal points.

Next, we count the decimal places in the factors and rewrite the problem without decimals. The
number of decimal places indicates the location of the decimal point in the product.

Students will show that they understand multiplying tenths by tenths equals hundredths by
completing a worksheet where they will use a hundredths grid to complete tenths-times-tenths
problems. They will analyze a model to identify the expression represented within the model and
explain why multiplying tenths by tenths equals hundredths

X. Review and closing


Ask students to discuss how they plan on remembering the multiplying decimals.
And give Homework about multiplying decimals.
